Back in the eighties, our local independent station (Channel 11), before cable, would show back to back reruns of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Bob Newhart. Funniest hour on TV!!!!
Mel never took himself too seriously. He was a Twin Cities legend.

Ok … It may have been a Minneapolis urban legend ? The Mary Tyler Moore show location was in Minneapolis where Mel Jass was on the air for WTCN TV . When I lived there people in the Twin Cities thought that Ted's character was Mel in real life .The two are very very much alike .
Ted is totally george putnam and jerry dunphy... if you go look up youtubes of them, it will make you laugh... the guys who wrote MTM show were in LA... so, it makes sense that 'sotans would think the local guy was the model, but it isn't reality.

I caught a bit of Caddyshack yesterday while flipping through the channels. Ted Knight was brilliant as Judge Smails. What a great ensemble cast!
