OK....

so I picked up a tech 21 Trademark 10 yesterday for a song ($40), largely based on the raves I have seen on TDPRI and....

It's great, except for the crappy little speaker.

I realize that this is a practice/recording/bedroom amp, but when, for a hoot, I plugged my weber 12" in a mesa cabinet into it, it almost ripped my face off.

SOOOOOO.... i realized this thing has great potential as a band practice amp (and gig backup in the event of a catastrophe) rather than lugging around my "real" (heavy) amps, except for that little speaker. And I don't want to lug around the mesa cabinet, and plugging into the PA isn't really a good option for this gig. THis would be for alt.country and some light blues, by the way, no judas priest covers....

Has anyone here switched out that stock crappy little speaker for perhaps a better crappy little speaker, or even tried to retrofit by squeezing a 10" speaker into that cabinet?

Well, you may call me a dreamer, but I suspect I'm not the only one....

by the way - why do some posts come up in bold typeface in the main menu? how do I do that?

well, I don't have any specific Trademark 10 experience, but I do know that a good speaker can make a world of difference.
I'd give a Ted Weber a call, and see what he suggests for it.
he's a very helpful guy with a fantastic product, and I sure he can help you out.

Isn't that nice? :D

I have the same amp. My 2 cents: don't change the speaker. It is specifically designed for this amp and cabinet. It is more of a "PA" type speaker, if you know what I mean, and exchanging it with something else, might totally screw up the sound. I'd rather keep the speaker and use an extention cabinet if I need more volume.

That said, there are some Eminence "PA" type 10" speakers you could check out. Upgrading to 10" is not such a great deal, but does involve some woodwork.

Sorry, no real help here, but I understand where you are coming from. I ran mine through a Marshall 4x12 (Celetion 75 Watt speakers of some type, I believe) a few times in the past and was really impressed. I'm sure a lot of it came from the closed 4x12, but I never thought to change the speaker in the Trademark cab itself.

I'm following along with great interest.

I have a TM-10

considered getting the Power Engine 60 to give it some oomph.

Got a tweed Blues Junior with the Jensen speaker instead.

But like I said, I would be interested in what information comes up in terms of a speaker upgrade.

how would that work? would you line out to the PE60 and defeat the crappy speaker?

don't know if it would defeat the speaker, but it would most likely drown it out.

But with the BJr. I know longer need that much volume from the TM-10 (relegated to the home office for practicing), but I am considering a speaker swap.

The TM 10 doesn't have a crappy little speaker, it has a small flat response speaker so that you can select the speaker EQ options and keep the package small, light, and crankable for home and studio use. If the speaker itself had much character, they'd be working at cross purposes for emulating the speaker/amp combination selected on the control panel.

However, if you decide to commit to a particular speaker flavor, replacing the stock 10" for a proper impedance whatever isn't too hard.

The now discontinued TM 30 was a TM 10 with a larger power section and a 12" speaker and was Tech21's intended solution to "How can I make my TM 10 louder?". The TM 60 has a totally different design, the 120 is more like a three channel TM 10.
