I had a highway one telecaster, but bought and put together a highway one esquire. Love the guitar so much I sold the telecaster. Now, I've been eyeing a Gretsch 5125 and have a mind to trade the esquire for it. Should I do it?

Can't help you man. I have both, and one cannot replace the other. Both are worth owning. Actually, tele & hollowbody Gretsch are the 2 best guitars made, IMHO.

Depends on how you feel about the Esquire. Me, if it was a guitar I really loved, I would keep it and start putting my change and the odd five dollar bill in a jar...

If you only save ten bucks a week, you'll have $520 a year from now!

I agree with Tim. If you don't like the Esquire, by all means, pass it on to someone who will. But if you do like it, try to wrangle a way to have them both. I would prefer to have 1 guitar that would do it all, but that's not how it works.

Even as a huge fan of Gretsch guitars, I'd keep the Esquire and save up for the 5125. Now if it was a Gretsch 6120 that would be a very different thing!

Good comments--I was originally going to ask how I can justify keeping the esquire. It plays great, but the Gretsch...I'll figure out how to own both.

gretsch c.s. is horrible. i bought a chet atkins g6122-1962, the george harrison one, and the tuner fell off, yes off, they would do nothing for me. instead of trading the esquire for it, put a four way switch in the esquire with texas specials and then you will have the tele sounds and many of the gretsch sounds in that 4th position, i havent picked up the 2500 dollar guitar since i had the 1600 one made if that says anything... plus esquires are bad a any way,

well.. first my disclaimer that I can't seem to follow my own advice.. as I can't seem to part with any of my existing guitars.. when eye'ing another. even tho some rarely get played..

that said..

if you've a chance and a hankering to get this Gretsch .. and it can ONLY happen by trading/selling the Esquire. . give it a shot..

and then you'll know if it's a guitar that you need..

you can always sell/trade it down the road.. if need be.. .

but you KNOW you'll have to put a Tele/Esquire back into the mix.. when you are able.. either in place of the Gretsch.. or in addition... you WILL miss not having a Tele..

I know I will never be without.. at least one Telecaster! ( and probably 2 to 3 ) ...

my collection:

G&L Tribute ASAT
Squire CV50
MIM Fat Strat
USA Strat
Epi Dot

would love to add:
a Les Paul and / or an SG,..

never played a Gretsch or a Ric.. but would sure like to experience them.. and something with P90's.. for the same reason..

I'll ALWAYS have Tele's.. and maybe an Esquire.. !

I wish my dilema was tryin' to decide between "2" guitars. There's at least 20 more out there that I hafta have.My living room looks like a Guitar Center now and I ain't close to finished..Keep the Fender and sell your wifes washer and dryer for the Gretsh..MHO

Don't get me wrong--I played a Les Paul Junior the other day that I need to own, too. I can always trade a 20+ year old Aria Pro II that I've had since high school in the 80's for the Gretsch or just buy it. The guitar is at one of our new sponsors, so, maybe I should help them out by moving some inventory.

I agree with the two posters who sang the praises of both Teles/Esquires and Gretsch hollowbodies. I'd hate to have to decide between them; they're my favorites as well.

It's not a bad idea for a Tele player to have a Gretsch, but not to give-up an (only) Tele for one. They're real nice and do some neat things, but they don't do what a Tele does.

Esquires are magic! I say got for owning both guitars. I've only loved one guitar thus far in my life, and I still own it. I'm working on making a second life. What fun is being monogamous with guitars anyway?
