Fun for about 5 minutes. They don't really work as a bass or as a guitar. I had one, had it set up properly, put good flat wound strings on it. Played it a few times and sold it

My old Dano '63 4 string short scale base I converted to six string tick tack bass.

(Keep in mind the specs on these 6 string basses may say 30" -but like this one, it is about 29.80").

I made this video 6 yrs ago just to demonstrate a $20+ cheap trem I made into a B- Bender. Just riffin' off the top my head :

I have an old Fender Bass VI. It's not a guitar I play all the time but it has come in handy for certain recording situations. I've seen the band Tortoise a few times and Doug McCombs plays one.

Go Johnny, go. .jpg This guy made good use of one during the recording of Let It Be. Of course, he had a lot more money for toys.

the thing i can't gauge well about it not doing bass sounds is like this...

i agree, i don't think it's going to get you to that sound. but personally i absolutely hate that modern full frequency clean class D bass sound that nobody but bassists seem to love.

but then there i think it holds up pretty well. that's similar to the type of bass sound i go for. it seems like slightly less body and sticks out a little more than a regular bass, but i wouldn't think twice if i wasn't seeing it. not ideal, but i feel like EQ'ing in post could fix that.

    I own two Bari's
One, a 30" real deal Danelectro.
There is nothing, and I mean Nothing, that does what a 30" Scale Length does. When those primary frequencies Resonate with NO electronic enhancement, MAN!

My other is a Tele Bari with a slightly shorter scale length.
It is Monster in its own right. The shorter scale length is better faster for solo runs.

But in the end, they are like Chalk and Cheese, very different.
I don't think you will be needing a Trem on either one.

Putting capos on them opens up yet another world of possibilities.
On the Fifth Fret, it is the same tuning as a regular Guitar but, it just sounds different.
Perfect for double tracking parts of all kinds.

    Buy it.
I don't think you will regret it.

Out: It's not a bass, it's a VI. It will never be any bassists primary bass.
In: The frikkin' The Cure tone, man!

I love mine but I hardly play it. Get a Squier so you don't feel guilty getting it dusty.

I tested a few Squier VI in different stores and they all needed a setup

I would only buy a used Squier VI at reasonable price with a good setup.

In case if it's not your cup of tea you can resell it without loosing money

My 1960s VI S2 ( strangle switch ) was my only bass for years and was used for heavy rock and prog rock through a Lennard double stack and then country through a 100W Dan Armstrong with a single 18" JBL, with the Lennard it was massive and the Dan Armstrong sounded like the bottom end of a Steinway

Should add, it replaced an L Series P Bass because I could only afford one instrument and I got it because " Jack "

Loved it and miss it badly every day.

The Fender VI belonged to Abbey Road.
John and George used it extensively throughout the Years.

I have one I'm going to sell it eventually, I'm not exactly eager to let strangers in my house these days.

I found it bad as both a guitar and a bass.

My brother has a Bass VI and between it, a Hofner, a Precision and a Mosrite, the Bass VI the only bass we've never used on any song. It never sounds right. I wanted it to sound right for the song badly because I like those pics of Lennon, Harrison and Jack Bruce as much as anyone.

Here is the best Bass VI song to me.

Depending on your budget, take a look at the Eastwood Hooky Bass 6 Pro. It’s Peter Hook’s (of Joy Division/New Order) signature model based on his Shergold Marathon 6. Awesome sounding instrument. Still tuned EADGBE, but with heavier string gauge than the Fender/Squier Bass VI models and with a wider neck. It can certainly fill the role of a bass, but also get those high registers. I previously owned a Fender MIM Bass VI (the one with a Jazzmaster pickup) as well as the Squier Bass VI models, and the Eastwood blows them away. I absolutely love mine. 806E2214-AD31-4A12-AF8B-29A72B6F21A7.jpeg
