I stumbled across this listing on Reverb and thought it odd. It's a non horsie silver Klon with some unusual markings on the back. I don't care about Klons beyond the curiosity factor, but this one is going for $4,300. Does anyone know how to recognize counterfeits (not that I'm saying that this is one).

Humangear should be one word. They are apparently an Asian distributor of some sort. If this is a clone, then its fair game to sell it, but they are advertising it as an authentic Finnegan Klon, which makes the stickers very suspect to me.

Not saying this is, (I have no idea), but I'd be more surprised if there weren't imposters out there, given what they go for these days.

Josh Scott mentioned on his stream about the history of the Klon that yes there are many counterfeits on the market.

50$ of parts for something that people will pay thousands for, it's just free real estate for scam artists. He said to be very cautious about buying one.

I asked the seller before posting here and have gotten no response. However, he added another photo with some Asian documents that I can't read. But one does look like a receipt. Mysterious.

I’m assuming anything that looks like a Klon is actually a Muslady Golden Horse in a big aluminum box.

If it was going for $150-200, I wouldn't care enough to post about it.

Are you suggesting a rehoused Muslady might not make a passable counterfeit?

Well if it was a counterfeit then based on the premise of this thread it is a passable one. The only thing strange about it is the stickers. If it's not a counterfeit, then that was a really ill-advised decision to leave the Asian stickers on the housing.

And really, cloned circuits costing a fraction of this price sound exactly the same as this. I may buy one someday to satisfy a curiosity, but please remember I had nothing to do with fetishizing this pedal. Josh Scott was right to lampoon the prices of this thing. Crazy.

The "-SIBERIA" is ok, apart from being black.

The following pictures are what constituted the "user manual" originally shipped -- at one point anyway -- with the unit. It was a crappy, photo-copied page, long before it all blew up.

Seller responded, saying the paperwork is from a Japanese importer. So, it found its way overseas and came back. Legit.

I strongly suspect this is a legit Klon. It's still not worth more than $200.

Honestly, at this point the only reason to buy an original Klon at asking prices is if you're a collector. hoping to turn a profit (assuming the bubble doesn't burst). If you just want a good Klon, there are many excellent options on the market, many in smaller more pedalboard friendly form factors.

I built myself one after finding diodes that had the correct voltage drop, it's my favorite pedal for getting more juice out of my JCM800. I might go 200$ for a quality one from a well known company, but no more.
