I’m pretty tacky. I mean, I wear these things on purpose:

…and my favorite guitar is not exactly “understated”…

…but I wouldn’t play ANY of those guitars.

But you do you.

I’m not crazy about any of them either and I definitely wouldn’t purchase any of them but if I had to chose, I’d rather pay homage to Leo than the other two but I’d want the zebra stripes removed from the design prior to painting.

Seems to me that any artwork applied to a guitar would best be specified or designed by the owner/buyer. From a business perspective you have a very small market of buyers and by picking images you are blindly throwing darts at a small target. And your cost in materials and time will be very high, likely never to be recovered if you are building to hold inventory.

I need your help. For starters, I'm not a guitar player, but I am a visual artist.

A buddy of mine has been urging me to paint on a guitar body and then sell it... somewhere. (Probably Reverb.)
Your so-called buddy has to be playing a joke on you. There are so many incredible finishes out there....how about a sparkle, or some unusual finish that gives the guitar character.

Why not paint it whichever way inspires you best and gift it to your friend? It sounds like you have someone in your corner who is supporting your art. If they're a gigging guitar-player you might even find an audience for your work.

While your mock-ups are not really my taste in art or design, I am more appalled that your first attempt at painting a guitar is profit motivated. Just have fun with it or keep it for yourself, or if you have built a client base around your art style, offer it to them?

Peoples faces on guitars…. I can’t find anyone who would want these, abstract paint jobs would be better, or even better yet, offer your services and let people chose, painting faces on guitars hoping they will sell is not a very good idea, I would offer painting services to paint what the customer wants as opposed to hoping someone might like your “non musician” take.

So, I bought a G&L ASAT Classic body, and then worked up three rough layouts for my future oil painting. Let's call them "Honoring Leo Fender", "Clops", and "Smooth Ride".

You would do me a great favor to look at the three images below, and then tell me which one YOU would like to play.

Let me know. Many thanks.

Steve
We do a fair number of guitars each year that have some type of graphic on them. Far more people dislike them than like them, but it only takes one to like a guitar for it to sell…
In my experience, it seems male guitar players under 30 and female guitar players of any age seem to like them far more than any other demographic - neither of which seem highly represented here.

I've never seen a portrait on a guitar before, and now I know why. It just doesn't work. I love Leo Fender, but I don't want his face in front of my belt buckle, ya know?
