Or at least I look at it as a defect. I was in Long&Mcquade for my weekly music store visit to see what they had in new. I saw an AV52RI on the wall and decided to play it through a Carmen Ghia head and 2X12 open back. It sounded nice. Just before I put it back on the wall I noticed that the routed out pickup hole could be seen on either side of the bridge. The bridge wasn't near wide enough to cover the hole. It was very noticeable. Anyone find this to be a regular occurrence? It s the first one I've seen.

It's my understanding that is supposed to be like that.

    Which Long & McQuade?

I've heard it referred to the tele 'butt crack'.

I guess I'm going to have to check my CS Nocaster and 52 hotrod when I get home. I'm positive they don't have it. And I'm positive the AV52RI I used to own didn't have butt crack either.

Id be worried if I didnt see the extra space it should be there. WHats weird is Nocasters dont have it but 52ri's do but the real 51 Nocasters just like 52 Teles had it too.

Nothing to be concerned with, just part of the AV52RI mojo.

I love my 52 but the bum crack is annoying. My 62 doesn't have one but I've seen others in stores that do. Weird.

I just got home and checked my Nocaster and 52 hotrod. The Nocaster does not have it. The hotrod does but its just very slight. Which is probably why I didn't notice it before. But there is definite butt crack. The one I saw in the 52 AVRI today was more like crator crack. It was impossible to miss. So probably the AV52RI that I owned was slight as well as I never noticed it.

Yep, my AV Hot Rod 52 has it. The bridge rout just peeks out from the side of the bridge plate:

It bothered me, too, until I learned that it's normal.

Feel free to look at my buttcrack ... just don't touch. ;)

Tonemonkey, that post cracked me up!! (pardon the pun)

    Here are a couple shots:
This is a stock photo I got off the web somewhere:

This is mine, sorry the photo's not larger, but you can see the gap:

Both my first '52 (an '04 model) and my current one (an '06) have the buttcrack. Just part of the guitar, as purpletele mentions the ashtray covers it.

I wonder why they don't do it on the Nocasters.

I can only assume that the Nocasters are routed to slightly higher tolerances?

It also depends on which bridge you have. Some - such as the Highway One plates - are made from slightly thicker steel, just enough to cover the "crack".

Alright, let's cut out the wisecracks (pun intended, don't care whether you pardon it or not :p).

Funny stuff, Tonemonkey, mudbean, jwl325. You really crack me up (somebody stop me  )!
