100% the tusq nuts are usually great. This one was lightly glued and slightly towards the high E side anyway. I removed it, removed the glue and it slides in nicely. I’ll shape and polish it then finally glue it in.

Also with pickguards fender or aftermarket, I rarely get one that is perfect. Especially with aftermarket bodies.

Here’s the almost final build. Still waiting on the tortoise guard, then wire it up, cut the nut, roll the fretboard edges and it should be good to go. 28A66C2D-B220-4F7D-8BDB-1346730D2044.jpeg DD81E162-2560-4BC1-85DD-94E1D23B5404.jpeg 5A6F539C-958E-48D9-9033-BDC869D37FE4.jpeg 08663551-7648-40B7-8D62-034FD6E48C37.jpeg

Here are the basic steps with pictures. Fit the blank to the slot. Draw the zero fret line. Blank is still too wide

Roght shape the top of the nut to the fretboard radius

Mark the offset at the nut and cut starter slots

Space the other strings. I like even gaps between them - you can do the math or cheat and buy the ruler

    IMG_4817.JPG

Cut the slots and bring them down to target depth

Final shape the nut, round off any sharp ends, polish it so it looks nice. Glue in very lightly so you can tap it with a drift to get it out in the future.

Yup, pretty much exactly what I do. The fender nut blanks I had were for guitar or bass so they were 1.75”. This one I cut recently and used the last of the blanks. 6CF59C01-D8FB-43D7-8A28-D164859F89C1.jpeg

Here’s the new USA made celluloid tort guard. Just horrible. The dollar store China made fits almost perfect compared to this one. I actually can’t even make this one fit. There’s just so many things absolutely off about it. 03CC85A5-1541-423F-B69F-EFB671ACB5CA.jpeg F419FA68-20B6-4EB0-992F-114A71BE9B84.jpeg A6D420F0-D0D7-44B3-92F0-582E6F10BDA6.jpeg If I line up the one screw with the bridge plate fairly straight there’s a horrible gap at the neck pocket and my neck pickup is forced into a 45 degree slant.
