Spent years convinced strats better than Tele. Then Tele better than strat. Now I think both are a necessary compromise for a singular guitar that can't and doesn't exist.

And jaguar and jazz master ain't the singular either.

I'm proposing it literally takes 2 guitars to truly unlock the tone of Fender.

I think you're short by about a half-dozen- The afore-mentioned Strat and Tele, but also Jaguar, Jazzmaster, Mustang, Starcaster, Cabronita, and Coronado

This vs that. Why can't we all just get along....Different types of guitars have different advantages to others. Whichever it is.....Keep on pickin!!!!!

I tend to agree with the OP. A Strat is a Strat and a Tele is a Tele.
The Tele is a stroke of pure, simple genius.....
The Strat neck and switch 2 and 4 positions are pure Strat.

In the interest of GAS, we need multiples of both.

Well I dont understand what the problem is. If you like Tele and Strat or if you cant decide which one is better, buy both (like probably everybody does). They are both great guitars each one with its own advantages as has been discussed many times before.

Yup, i fully agree with @MAXXFIELD , a tele and a strat are both required to fulfill the needs of the classic Fender sound. I would add that they be single coil in their traditional layouts. Sure, there are some other tones provided by a few other Fender guitars, but really not necessary.

I don't know buddy, opportunity cost exists, not all of us have enough money to own two guitars.

And I always say to the people who are considering to get more than one guitars, "get a proper one that you want instead of getting two half-assed ones you want(unless you are a collector)".

What about a Nashville Telecaster? Not a Strat, but you can get the Strat-quack on a Telecaster. That's really the only Strat-like tone I'm ever interested in.

Curious how the black pickguard & the shape of the switch tip fits into this.

If you can only afford one, then I agree, buy only one, as good one as you can. But I didnt understand this articles point being which one to choose if you can only afford one. It is about is tele bether or is strat better. OR are they both good guitars each one with their own characteristics.
In this thread it says that more than 90% of people here in tdpri have more than 4 guitars. A lot have 10+ or even more.

I've never tried one but I'm guessing theres too many pickups on this. Every time a guitar has this many pickups theres serious Dud combinations involved. I'd argue theres no bad tele switch position and that strats get 4 out of 5 right (depending on users preference)

I do think that the nashville is about as close as you can get to a combination of the two, and considered mentioning it in original post good call. I still think theres strat things that it can't do that I require for my overall fender tone depository

My strat has a blackguard with a gold tip... but I believe those two features have no impact other than personal preference.

Nope Im not. All those other ones sound like lesser strats or tele combinations. It's okay if you like those though. I'm all for personal expression.

Of course it is and it should be. I'm addicted to

    Practicing guitars
    Trying Guitars
    Hunting guitars
    Gathering guitars
    Trading guitars

Nothing much better than the feeling of coming up with justification for a specific guitar... spending 3 months hunting down a great deal on a one of a kind.... buying it... waiting weeks for it to show up.... and then forgetting you even ordered it!
