Strat pickup numbers

Just curious to know which number corresponds to which pickup / switch position on a standard Strat. Is the bridge pickup the 1 or the 5? I know the middle is 3 and the in-betweens are 2 and 4 but which way does it go? Been playing Strats for almost 50 years and I've never known (or needed to know). Is there a convention?

#1 is the bridge.

The convention is Bridge=1, neck=5.

I've seen some people on youtube mistakenly get it the other way around, but this is the way it is generally referenced.

This has always confused me as well
I would have numbered starting at the neck pickup.

"5th floor, rich and creamy"
