I have a 77 strat with the original nut. Appears to be synthetic. I've never had a problem with it. I assume that Tele's from the same period would have used the same nut/material. However, the bridge has been decked from serveral decades, so I don't know if the nut has good properties re staying in tune with the tremolo (vibrato) bar.

Anyone know what material these nuts were made from?

    Not sure, but probably melamine.

Fender used something called "cyclovac" possibly similar to or the same as melamine.
