It's kinda funny, before I made one cut on my Brotherhood Build I wanted to do this song as my completion video. Then later, after my horrific wreck thanks to my dear friend Rich made it come true. Over two hundred of you pledged your prayers, hearts and thoughts on my behalf, and praise God he listened. I won't be playing along here, but just know brothers and sisters, my heart is singing

When in Germany with my mom at age 10 I felt very worldly, my dad was in the Army, I'd been all over and seen it all I thought. The first year mom took me to a Christmas watch they called it then. Sometime during the evening (more like a candle light vigil) I heard this song in the original German. It made the hair on my head stand WAY up as I understood the words and the difference in inflection and wording. I never looked at Silent Night the same way again. And years later, when Mannheim Steamroller did a version I actually cried,as I think maybe the original intent called for. I hope you enjoy Stille Nacht

    Ever yours, Dave

Merry Christmas to you and yours Dave :).

The surprising thing about the song, is that it was originally written to be accompanied by a guitar.

It doesn't take much of a stretch of imagination to imagine what the first performance of that song might have been like in a small church in post-Napoleonic war Austria on Christmas Eve in 1818 - with guitar music.

The last of my maternal relatives that emigrated from Germany have been laid to rest, but Stand By Me is alive and relevant!
Brought a tear to my eye actually, and for the living...

Merry Christmas to yo too @crazydave911 !

    Thank you old friend :)
In third term, it is a diminutive of "dear", but as in many things there is no English equivalent that expresses the same affection and closeness
    Always old friend
And so it was, a Stauffer no less
That brought a tear to me eye for sure as my grandpa Lane used to say. And as I said, on none other than a Stauffer, the employer until he left for America of one Christian Friedrich Martin :D
Thank you friend, I hope we also grow closer as the years go by :D

Du is the familiar form of YOU (as opposed to Sie being the formal YOU, or THEY). Never heard Mein Du translated as MYDEAR, which would typically be something like mein liebling or mein schatz. But given that "mein Du" translates to MY YOU (in the close, familiar sense) I suppose it could be interpreted loosely as referring to some one near and dear to you. Using Du too soon, or with the wrong German might elicit the response : Schlafen wir jetzt zusammen? (Are we now sleeping together ?) o_O
