Is that Stevie Ray's cousin playing with him or what? /rimshot

I wonder if that is the same Esquire Stills used 8 years later in 1991 for this solo performance of "For What It's Worth":

I hate the sound of the chorus that he used here, it ruins everything to me.

German TV is so cool :D

Also, I was thinkin that is SRV when I watched the vid! (he was on German TV, too, a few times). Smear a little Schuhcreme under the guy's chin and you'd never know the difference, wow. Well, except for the guitar playing and stuff, lol.

No pick you say ? Leave us not forget Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham .

You are very correct. I did leave out those two great players.

I had a workshop with GE this past weekend (at Fur Peace).

And he said, about ten years ago, he was listening to himself playing.
And he said he hated what he heard and at that time decided to chage to no pick.
He still plays a few things with a pick but mostly without.

There's no comparing early Stills to anyone because his sense of time is way beyond. Btw, neat Esquire, indeed.

On Super Session, Stills used the Black LP Custom he used in Buffalo Springfield.
There is some debate that the Wooden Ships guitar was a White Falcon with the mud switch on. I can get pretty darn close with my Esquire with the switch forward. I wasn't there so I don't know.

Big fan here, too!

There are photos from that period with Stills playing a blonde two-pickup Tele . . . my bet would be that Wooden Ships is the Tele or Esquire with a wah cocked to mellow, then kicked to bright for that middle part of the solo.

I dig the tone he has happening...nice gritty overdrive. It appears to be a 1950s tweed Fender that he's plugged into.

I got to see Steve in June at one of the Springfield Reunion shows. The one at the Fox in Oakland.

Steve played several different guitars; 2 hollows and 2 Strats at least. No Esquires or Teles, sorry.

I'm supposed to be this big Neil fan but I spent 95% of the time watching Ritchie and Steve.

I agree with Paul. I think Wooden Ships is a Gretsch; there's no percussive edge on the notes I would expect on an Esquire. Even with no pick.

I heard that he was almost in the monkies but didn't want to do it. I also heard that he was invited to be the bassist for the Jimmi Hendrix exp

He played that Les Paul in Buffalo Springfield

Listen to the lead breaks, it's the black Les Paul.
