No problem. There's a lot of artists I don't "get" either. It's a matter of taste and everyone's is a bit different.

    Maybe someday...

Yes, I do enjoy trying to learn the guitar parts on these songs. I dont remember a thread about a girl on YouTube learning Steely Dan tunes?
Are you sure you are quoting the right guy, or does that matter?

There's an interview of Larry Carlton in that Legends Of Tone mag by Guitarist that came out recently. He said he went in the studio and kept doing different solos and they picked out the one they wanted.

No, she was playing a difficult guitar song by someone else but guys were saying she shouldn't be doing that.

And your saying I was one of them? If so, Why are you not quoting me from that thread? What does her video have to do with this thread?

To recap: A girl on a YouTube video not in this thread, tried to learn a song from an artist that was not Steely Dan, and was told by some guys that were not me, that she shouldn’t.
    Duly noted.

Wow, 7 pages of replies to a Steely Dan thread. You would think they were Joe Bonamassa or something.

I've always believed that they had the unique ability to entertwine great pop melodies and hooks around some pretty sophisticated jazz chords/voicings. Unusual for popular music in the 70's and 80's.

Kinda like Duke Ellington (one of their heros).

And we always used their LP albums to demo stereo/souind systems at the stereo store.

I appreciate their talent, I like about half of their stuff, but there are few in my area who can play it.

I’m loving this thread. I posted early on, but I gotta return! Beyond the amazing music / musicianship, their lyrics paint such pictures. So glad they weren’t into the whole music video genre. You can see / hear for yourself with SD. Some of my favorite lines have already been quoted here, but...

Turn that jungle music down, just until we’re out of town.

The kid will live and learn, as he watches bridges burn from the point of no return.

Take off your chinos, and sit right down.

He said “you must be joking, son, where did you get those shoes”?

You owed him money, but you gave him something more, with a gun.

Babe, you look delicious, and you’re standing very close. But this is lower Broadway, and you’re talking to a ghost.

    I could go on forever!

Steely Dan - loved them in the 70s and love them now. Nothing quite like their "sound".

There was a band in the early 80's from CT (I believe) that did a whole SD show except for a few of their own tunes. They toured up and down the east coast...

    Beau Bolero.

    They were TREMENDOUS!

    I believe they're still around???

Hmm. I was round those parts back in that timeframe, but I don't remember them. Used to hit Toad's Place, Shaboo, even the Back Door, Picardi's Ali Puma Cafe and that joint in Torrington, but never saw them. Dang.
