Glad you're digging the Steely Dan... and I yes I already knew (he said while patting himself on the back in proper self-congratulatory fashion)

Did not. I consider my self an errant nerd on them too.

Gaucho is my least listened to and probably their last good record, though.

It's pretty smooth.

"Fagen and Becker hired Mark Knopfler to play the guitar solo on "Time Out of Mind" after hearing him play on Dire Straits' hit single "Sultans of Swing." Several hours of Knopfler's playing were recorded at the session, but his contributions as heard on the record are limited to a matter of seconds."

Who is Steely Dan? Must have been light rock, right? :D

Okay, just kidding (not by much though), but my GF in college listened to Steely Dan, while I was listening to blues rock/hard rock. I'm sure I'd recognize their stuff, but I can't name a song or band member. My radio stations didn't play them AFAIK.

Eh, my GF probably had better music taste than I did at the time.

I did not know that - now that I listen it kind of sounds like him from 1:50-2:00 or so

Go get Aja, and Gaucho, and Pretzel Logic....oh and Katy Lied, right now.

You just don't know what you've been missing.

That makes sense, because none of it sounds like Knopfler to me, except the little bit of stuff at the very end. Still, it doesn't jump out at me as Knopfler.

Had no idea.
Steely Dan is in my top 3 bands, maybe even at the top. I saw Steely Dan in concert twice. Once during the Y2K tour and then a couple of years ago. Tightest, most precise band I've ever seen. Outstanding touring musicians.
I've got the Citizen Steely Dan box set, Everything Must Go, Two Against Nature and Fagan's The Nightfly. All of them masterpieces in my eyes.

Knopfler is the under mixed and overly compressed guitar in the right channel. Knopfler likely laid down a lot of parts that sounded just like him - but I'm sure Becker and Fagen didn't want it to sound like Dire Straits.

I'm not taking a shot at Becker and Fagen, they know what they are doing and they are great at it. I'm a big Steely Dan fan... I just find it funny that they hire someone with such a distinct style/sound because they love it - then mix it so it isn't recognizable.
