I ordered all the rest of the parts I should need to finish wiring this amp head from Hoffman, $125 . Friday or Saturday arrival two orders because I forgot to get some turrets to use where I am altering the cathodes of the 1st socket. Each 1/2 of tube will have it's own cathode Bias.

Beware: I used those multi strip pine boards from Lowes to make a book shelf. The longitudinal joints are coming unglued over time in places. A few bucks saved seems like a bad idea now.

I used them because I liked the grain and knots in them. Every board is dovetailed and gives much strength from separation. The side boards even have an Inlay across the strips that will strengthen them from separation. I don't foresee a problem.

Some wiring of Pots and also more board population, all resistors on board. I had to put in an order for a 100P Cap I forgot to order. Going to foil test some capacitors tomorrow.

Great looking work.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. My other amps don't get played near as much.

Have you built the -35V bias section, I would like to see how you do this part, and are you adding in a bias pot.
Cheers Ron

Looking good kap.

So, did you read or hear much about the classictone transformers for the brown amps before deciding to go with them, or was it mostly a right-price, good enough specs kind of thing?

I’m thinking of going this route too but may opt for the expensive version that has both the lower plate voltage leads (300v) as well as standard 330v to see if there’s one I like better. But if 330v does the trick for most everyone who makes 6g3 clones, I’d just assume not fuss with the extra cost and experimentation....you got any thoughts for me on that?

When do you anticipate turning it on?

Sam

Ps:just watched vid. Nice! Maybe up and running in next few days....cool.

I have a couple Classictone in my 5e3s.

Just a matter of wiring the board in now. Most everything else is done. I just have to stay motivated.

The PT situation for the 6G3 amp is a tricky one. The standard Deluxe 330V-0-330V PT can result in a plate voltage much closer to a blackface deluxe than the relatively low value on the 6G3 schamtic. To get it in range you need to be using a 5Y3 or a 5R4 rectifier.

I went down the route of the expensive version with the 300-0-300 taps as well as I wanted to try and hit the schamatic values as closely as possible. Careful rectifier selection made this possible. seemed worth it to me but I'm not sure if there was any perceptible difference in sound other than in my head.....

What I certainly wouldn't do though is to go with the Mercury Magnetics PT. Huge amount of money and it looked fantastic but not worth the extra cash in my opinion - for me the Classic Tone was spot on. This may be influence by the fact that the export version of the MM unit has a 230/240V primary..... now, is that 230V OR 240V. Well, it turned out it was 230V - so for a 240V wall voltage all my voltages were too high. Classictone have a seperate tap for 230V and 240V. Spot on.

Hope this rambling helps.

That helped a ton, Steve! Thanks.

What rectifier did you go with?

And cap, I imagined you intended to post something but all we got was “I”! I was envisioning you falling asleep while responding late last night hehe.
