After many years away from the live music scene, I'm now living in a place where I'm able to go see great acts without having to drive for hours. But what I'm suddenly finding is that the kind of bands I want to see (eg Son Volt, Lindi Ortega) are playing in clubs where it's standing room only. That is, it looks like I'd be paying good money to spend three hours on numb feet in a tightly-packed crowd of sweaty drunks. Sure, up and coming bands have always played in beer pits, but I sort of expected established bands to have moved on from that. So, is this standing room only arrangement for established bands in smaller venues just the way things are done in 2017?

Dunno if it's just an Australian thing, or what.

Does the venue let you know in advance?....or do you just walk in and find out AFTER they've got your money?????

I'm too old to stand all the time. Been there, done that. That's for young'uns.

It's a weird thing, just standing there watching music. I did it when I was young, and for Redd of course.

Last time I saw Tab Benoit we stood for an hour before it started. Then a couple more to listen. Had to go home at midnight. Love Tab. But it was not an enjoyable experience.

The few I mentioned above do tell you, if you scan the website. I just didn't believe them.

That's almost always the case at every show I go to. It's tough on our old feet, but sitting wouldn't feel natural to me at this point.

I rather go to a show in a place like that than in a big large venue.

My rule of thumb is that if the place employs security I'm not going to have a good time.

Huh. I'm at the age where I'd prefer to sit and really listen, but I'll go to a club and stand if that's what I gotta do to see somebody I want to see. In any case, I'm not planning to do anything that is going to bring me into contact with security, so I reckon I can have a good time even if they are around...

Most clubs I've been to are mostly standing, with a few bar stools here and there.

The places with lots of tables are usually restaurants or pubs where the music is just a secondary thing.

I'd be perfectly happy with a bar stool for myself and the missus. But . . . no bar stools. Standing room only.

I'm not complaining, just surprised that this seems to be how things are. These days, about the only time I spend that amount of time on my feet is during Sydney's annual City-to-Surf 14k fun run.

Yep - unless you are in a stadium or in a theater, shows are now standing only.

My wife likes to get there early and get a spot right up front.

Drive near, walk to the venue, stand for an hour until the show starts, stand through the show, walk back to the car. She falls asleep as soon as she sits in the car. I get us home. The worst is when it is a concrete pad you are standing on - no give at all.

    Repeat multiple times per year.

We are in our mid 50's - sometimes we leave early on a Friday evening show after a long week, but we still go out.

Not for me. We go to a 250 seat venue to see national acts. Last I was there was to see the Jayhawks. We'll be seeing the Subdudes there in April. It's also 5 minutes from my house by car. There's a place in Baltimore like you describe. I wouldn't go on a bet.

The venue I frequent most is 750 max. And has a few tables and chairs upstairs, but the majority (except maybe 20 or 30) stand.
