As a side , it is interesting to watch the dampening effect created by the squirrel grabbing and releasing the Slinky above the end of the Slinky . This creates conflicting motion within the Slinky and tends to dampen movement which returns the Slinky to a stable resting position long before that which would have resulted if the Slinky was grabbed and released at the end only .
Eventually , the squirrel will chew through the wood supporting the feeder pole and crash the feeder to the ground .
Use something that a squirrel will not chew on to support the feeder pole .

If that is effective, it kind of ruins one of my favourite sayings:

“Some people are like Slinkys. They don’t serve any real purpose, but it still makes you smile when you push them down the stairs.”

I quit pretending I was buying birdseed awhile back.:)

squirrels are way more entertaining than birds

They are the very best "pets", they don't eat much, they don't shed in your house or chew on your guitars, they don't need walks and you don't have to clean up after them, and there are no vet bills.

And yet they provide endless entertainment

I don't have too much of a problem with squirrels. The deer clean out my bird feeders about every third night. The solution seems obvious but if I put the feeders higher it becomes a pain in the ass to fill them.

I gave up on my garden years ago because it was to much money and work to feed the deer and not me!

The deer are a real problem in this area. The ditches are full of carcasses and everybody's cars are dented.

Ok, I do not know the answer but does anybody know how long a standard Slinky is, if you were to completely stretch it out into a straight wire

Deer cause by far the most damage of anything "out there"

One solution that would at least help, is if they would consider moving the "Deer Crossing" signs away from high-vehicle-traffic areas, to less-traveled-by-auto areas, that way the deer could cross in safer areas :)

I agree they can be entertaining.....especially to watch after they've chewed through your TV cable at the utility pole. Gives you something to watch for the two or three days it takes the cable service company to come out to repair.
My mother's condo management once wanted to hire a company, at considerable expense, to capture and re-locate their squirrels. Several of us finally got through to them and explained it would take about three days for other squirrels to repopulate the area. They would have had better results if they'd cut down all the pecan and oak trees......the very features that made the complex so desirable.
