So I have wanted a TV Yellow Double Cut for ever. There is something about them. I've had a Gibson SG with p90's which was nice, but it just wasn't the same.

Ideally I've wanted a DC with a 60's style neck as I generally don't like the fat 50's version. I couldn't get one from Gibson nor Epiphone, and didn't want to pay 2k for a Maybach, so back in 2020 I bought a Gibson LP Special in TV Yellow to see if it would scratch the itch... it was a diaster from the start.

The neck was *huge*, the finish was awful (the binding on the neck was totally uneven and looked like it had been scraped with an axe), the pickups were so dark as to be unusable - Gibson agreed and offered to fix it under warranty, but despite *really* trying, I didn't like the guitar and sold it. Genuinely it was never worth even close to the 1400Euro I paid for it, it was a real disappointment.

I sold my last p90 guitar last year (50's Tribute SG), and although didn't miss it, I did miss the p90's.

Fast forward to last week - I have had my eye on a Harley Benton DC for about 3 years, but figured it really couldn't be any good for less than 200Euro! It was in my basket for ever, but I could never bring myself to buy one. I saw they released the 'fat' version with a thicker neck and stacked humbucker, with the 'classic version' with the 60's neck and single p90 on backorder... I figured I didn't want to miss out.

I watched a lot of YT videos all saying that this guitar was a hidden gem, and worth 4 times the price, an ideal modding platform if you wanted to... and I clicked buy. It came in the post today and I am *not* disappointed at all! At first glance it's fantastic!

Brilliant build quality (perfect, not a scratch on it), decent equipment (Wilkinson tuners, decent bridge) and amazingly playable out of the box (suitably low action, no buzzing, playable up the neck). It's also crazy light! I've not had a chance to play plugged in much, but the p90 is night and day better than the Gibson one in the Special with the p90 chime and definition. The fret board feels like ebony, really tight and dense, smooth with no grain/pore marks at all, it's nicer than all the Pau Ferro I've seen recently.

Genuinely I am amazed, the hype so far is proving true. For 195Euro!!

It really does throw into question how Gibson could have charged seven times more for the lemon of a guitar they sold me, or indeed for any type of 'LP Special' guitar.

The only thing I'd change so far is the nut. It has a nut made out of the same material that Gibson uses, a white artificial material, so I'll change for a bone nut at some point, but this is purely personal preference.

Wow.

That's a mighty fine guitar you've got yourself there, Mr. Ellis.

My little friend here wants to hello.....

@Dik Ellis === I also noticed you have a Marshall pedal on the shelf. 🤘🏽
Likewise my friend, Hamer made some fantastic guitars. Also had a Candy Apple Special with a PAF on the bridge and some kind of firebreather in the neck. The Marshall pedal is a Blues BreakerII.

OP - Don't feel like the Lone Ranger!
After decades of nasally single coils and dark humbuckers, I discovered the joys of P90s.
I now own two Indonesian Hamers, one "Special" with 2 P90s that were great out of the box.
The other, a "Junior" with a single P90 similar to yours that got a Lollar swapped in.
It is now a snarling beastie and one of my favorites!
Not bad for a guitar that cost $300 with HSC delivered.

I am currently working on an Agile Les Paul style which came with "stacked P90s," and they bugged me, so it's getting a set of Lollars as well (thread to come). That guitar set me back $415 new and it's extremely well put together - all I'm changing is the pickups and the pots, which would be OK, but they have push/pull functionality due to the "stacked" pickups, which I no longer need.

Then I recently found a guitar online that's a double cutaway and looks like a Hamer Studio for $200. It took a while to arrive, but it got here without incident. May keep the P90s (they're not stellar), or may swap 'em out for mini humbuckers (Lollar makes the adapter rings @ $10 apiece). I have an old Seymour mini humbucker neck pickup in my parts box, and another one for the bridge would cost me far less than a set of Lollars.

P90s deliver great rock and blues tones. I use the tone knob on the one pictured above like an OD box. It never disappoints. And to think, I could have paid more for a new Gibson than I did for this entire fleet of P90-equipped imports. It's a wonder they stay in business ...

I also have the 2 x p90 Indonesian Special type.. the pickups are certainly more than decent. Mine cost me AU170 (no case though) which ŵas an absolute bargain.

Thanks for the comments and insight everyone! Still very happy with the guitar - was able to pklay it pretty loud through one of my amps at practice today, really does sound great!

Now I'm considering getting the blue DC junior too! ><

If HB's were ONLY cheap, they wouldn't be the phenomenon they appear to have become, because there are cheap guitars all over the place, their brand names coming and going.

HB seems to be playing for keeps. There's an interview with their top guy somewhere on YouTube and when you hear his team's strategy, it comes down to making really good guitars that are affordable to a lot of players. They take customer input seriously and are geared up to make quick changes to their designs. I have one of their PRS takeoffs and a LP Junior-like model and they are simply excellent guitars regardless of their sticker price. Their "Roswell" P90 pickups are a blast. I've never owned a Les Paul but am seriously thinking now of going with one of their top-of-the-line LP models. Based on what I've seen from HB in the sub-$300 US range, I'm guessing the LP will be superb. The PRS clone (with P90's!) is better than it has any right to be at under $250.

Well, 3 week check in!

Did the magic wear off? Did it fall apart? Did I return it or flip it?

None of the above! The honeymoon really period isn't over! All my other guitars have stayed in their cases and the HB has had all the play time! It really is lovely to play and the p90's have tone for days. Much much better than my old p90 Gibson Special.

One thing I did change - the original bridge was fine, but to get the string height I wanted to had to deck it nearly to the body, which I didn't like. Also when playing close to the bridge, it had some really sharp edges. So I decided to change it... It turns out that I'm not the only one with this small gripe, and everyone recommended a MusicLily bridge from Amazon. I got one of these:

Bridge

It's much lower profile (strings are much lower, with much more room above the studs), and really smooth... a huge upgrade for 16$!!

After installation, I have a lovely really low action, and the lower string heights up the neck make the p90 sing too. I am delighted! So delighted in fact I have bought another HB DC Junior in Pelham Blue!! 10 week backorder, but already looking forward to May when it should arrive.

Genuinely, I have 10+ guitars atm, Gibson, Fender, Schecter, Epiphone etc... the HB holds it's own, and in honesty outshines some of the others! It is definitely much much better than the Gibson LP Special I bought in 2019 which disappointed me to the core. THe HB is not 'just good for the price', it's good full stop.

Gibson has no excuse to charge the prices they do for Specials and Juniors, and ship with the quality issues they have, when HB can turn these out by the ton, with decent quality and sub $200 price tag.

I gotta say, the recurring HB 'bridge gripe' I read about and why the builder/ company has not addressed this just really bugs me, and has kept me from buying one of these LP Junior/ Special types.

Maybe it's just my stubborn 'principle' getting in my way,
but every time I read about this bridge issue, it makes me doubtful about the guitar/brand; like:
" How could they miss this? I wonder what else is wrong or going to be a problem here?"

* you'd think they'd just put on a better bridge that does its job, and charge $10 more.

Seems like a pretty 'big thing' to **** up on- is to me.
