Hi Folks

I am thinking of a speaker upgrade for my Marshall, it already has a Fender like clean channel and I want to see if replacing the Celestion Heritage 70w with a Weber or Jensen will make it more so.

The amp will run a 16 ohm speaker and a 16 ohm cab, or an 8 ohm cab with the internal speaker disconnected. Question is can I fit an 8 ohm internally and run it from the ext jack on its own? To clarify or put it another way does it have to be an 8 ohm CAB? Can the 8 ohm speaker be fitted in the amp itself and run from the ext jack? I think the answer is yes but wanted to check..

I do have a reason for not wanting to buy a new 16 ohm.. i.e. the 8 ohm will probably be going in a 5e3 build at some point and if I do like the new speaker better than the Celestion will buy a 16 ohm one for the JTM.

Cheers
Wayne

If clean is what you are looking for, I would say the celestion is cleaner than the typical jensens you see in fenders. If you are really looking for a clean, clean speaker that will stay clean and take anything you throw at it, go with a JBL or EV.

I had a JTM60 and really loved it, It is certainly one of the Marshalls with a nice clean tone on channel 1. I think if you want cleaner you might have to look into a speaker with a higher spl level....probably one of the eminence speakers. I doubt you will be able to achieve what you want with a speaker change though. Also, I clipped the diode on mine and the distortion was much nicer that way, really nice amp. I wish I kept mine really.

What I meant is a nice overdriven type clean channel because i'm not a fan of and don't use the drive channel due to the diodes. I may remove them as you did jtees.

Basically with my Mule overdrive I get a pretty good grungy Neil Young tweedy tone on the clean channel and am currently toying with the idea of buying a DRRI but that is a thousand Pounds UK so I am just intrigued as to whether a Jensen C12N or Weber 12F150 will add to the Fender vibe. It has 6L6's and is described by some as fender voiced stock.

My main Q was regarding the ohm's anyway.

C12N and the some webers, is as sparkly fender as you get, however, with 30+ watts of marshall, you will be clipping that bad boy soon. Maybe something with a little
more girth...like an EV or JBL will put you more in that (clean) zone longer.
