I have a couple extra speakers and I'm wondering what is the best position to store them in or does it matter ? I have them in boxes cone side up at the moment.

This could end up being a long thread. Truth is I have no idea but since this is the internet I'll take a shot.
I would thing cone up or cone down would be best. But I have speakers from the 50s that have been installed in cabs and still work fine so you have to wonder if it really matters.

Oh keep them some where cool, dry and away from cats.

I have a bunch cone up.

But because I am short of space I have other speakers of the same size cone down on top of the speakers that are cone up.

So does that mean my answer cancels itself out?

I just put them on the shelf cone up unless I have a box for them. Really the speakers I have laying around, I could care less if they get destroyed.

Oh man I was hoping an expert would chime in and say for sure cone up, down or sideways.
I wanted to ask if we need to start putting our amps on there backs, fronts or sideways when they're not being used.

Always store them vertically, ideally with the back facing north. Next best choice would be south facing but then be sure to shelter the dust cap from direct sunlight. Never store a speaker in a east or west facing orientations unless you are less than 18 degrees from either pole, or if mandated by religious doctrine.

;) Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously...

In my thoroughly ameture opinion, I doubt orientation matters except wher it may protect it from physical damage (storing it face down might help protect the cone). Just use common sense to protect the magnet from impact, the basket from pressure which might warp it, the cone from puncture, and the whole thing from moisture and corrosion.

I have a related question.

Is it harmful to the speaker to store it by sticking it to a magnetic surface? For example, by hanging it from the bottom of a metal shelf by its magnet? Would the magnet be significantly affected by working that hard over an extended period of time?

What are your thoughts?

It probably wouldn't hurt it but it would probably damage the label if that mattered to you, or it could hurt the frame when pulling it off.

I don't think it matters which side is up, but they should be in a box or bag, to protect them from dust and moisture. Fluctuating temperatures can cause condensation to form on uncovered metal, not good. FWIW, I've heard that athlete's foot spray may help prevent foam rot for long-term storage; of course YMMV.
