The AA864 is a full sounding 50 watts. That said, if you're running them in a closed back cab, I would go with a pair of 50 watt Weber 10F150P's with moderate doping.

My Tremolux cab has Webers. A 10A125 and a Blue Pup.

One is Jensenish with clarity, the other has a solid midrange. US and Brit tones. Both alnico, 30 Watt VCs, no dope on the surround. They are a good blend out in front of the cab, very efficient (loud!), and have more low end punch than one might expect.

Bassman head on top of a cab. Somebody is going to run a bass through that thing when you aren't looking. Make sure you have beefy enough speakers that a bass won't blow them out. Just sayin'

If it weren’t for the fact that the guy’s dad bought the head and the cab together brand new I might consider it. But given that fact I think I’ll probably keep the two together.

Lots of great info here, which I appreciate very much.

As far as I know it is 4 ohm. But I don’t have the amp here to verify.

I've had good experiences of playing a Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb loaded with two Weber 10F125s, 25 Watts each. Very big sound.

I've tried alnico speakers, but the Eminence Copperheads in my Fender Prosonic are the best sounding to me, especially if you're looking for a Fender sound.

If you have 4x8ohm speakers in parallel it's 2 ohms.

All Fender 4 speaker combo amps are configured this way including Super Rev, Quad Reverb, Concert 410.

BF and SF Bassman heads had 4 ohm taps to run a 212 box or 2 x112 or 115 boxes together.

Did the tech give the reason/science behind alnico and closed-back cabs not being friendly? I'm extremely curious there.

It is a 2x10 cabinet from a tremolux. As far as I know the bassman has a 4 ohm tap.

Ok so you have a Bassman head. So 2 X 8 ohms will give you 4 ohms.

I'd had a pair of Weber C10Q's (currently known as the 10F125) in boxes for about 10 years... A week ago I replaced a 12" ( Eminence Red Fang) with them, just for shiz and giggles.

Good lord...! I don't recall them being so robust.

I have no idea whether the current iteration of Weber is any good...some players whom I respect seem to feel that when Ted departed, Weber went south...

But if you can latch on to some of the old ones, the C10Q variety, I think you'll be happy.

And for what it's worth...a pair of new Jensen's sit in boxes, where I think they will remain until I feel a need to blow them up...

    They suck.

Whatever Weber says is a good starting point.

I've got a Blackface style combo with WGS G10C and WGS G10A, ceramic and alnico, sounds sweet to me.

Weber is all I'm buying from now on. Their quality to price ratio is a crazy good value.

As pointed out above, is this still the case 'today' is a VG question. I've not bought a new Weber in over a decade. Hell, 3 Webers ago I spoke with Ted when specing, that is how long ago and how long I been doing Webers.

I used to gig with a bandmaster thru closed 2x10 tremolux can. Nothing ever could touch those 2 x ToneTubby 40/40 ceramics!

I bought a 8" alnico-5 that I put in a Frankenstein 90s Crate VC508 and it sounds phenomenal. Free break-in if you ask nicely. That was 2 summers ago so I doubt much has changed.

Funny you should say that. I have a 8" Weber Alnico that came in a VC508 I still have. [both the 8" Alnico and the VC508]. I was later given a SS Squier amp that I put the 8" Weber in, putting the orig 8" back in the VC508 to sell it off. I still have it all, but the SS Squier tiny amp actually sounds really good with the Weber Alnico in it. The VC508 head spent most of it's time with me in an old 112 ply cab with a Cannabis 12". Once I got a few Hammond Ghia head built up, I don't mess with any of that other stuff. I forgot I had that stuff until I read your post. ;O

I found the amp on reverb that someone associated with Sweetwater to some loose capacity modded to be Class-A. The price was right and I couldn't afford the Swart I wanted (and still can't for that matter). I was looking a Celestion and after asking a few questions, I was guided to Weber by people who know speakers.
