I am looking for a pair of 8 Ohm 10” speakers that will work well with 90’s Eminence 1028ALPs. Just adding a couple of 1028Ks is an obvious choice, but are there better options? I would like to stay around $100-150 for the pair, and used is fine.

I have two 2x10 cabs originally loaded with early 70’s, CTS ceramics. I replaced one pair of CTS drivers with the EMIs, and am thrilled with it.

The ceramic CTS drivers are fine for my needs, but I do prefer the alnico’s. At the same time, I really miss being able to run both 2x10s at the same time for a huge wall of sound!

As it stands right now their impedance is miss-matched, so I use them separately with different amps.

    Suggestions?

Don't think you are going to find any Alnico speakers at that price point.

If you’re willing to chance it, there are bargain vintage Alnicos out there, some pulls from old organs and such. I lucked out with a brown frame CTS Alnico that is perfect in my champ ii.

These will only handle 15 watts each, but worth a look at ~$60.

I have a Sig ceramic in my Vibro Champ and I’m real happy with it.

I got the 1028ALPs used for right at $100 for the pair. They dont have to be alnico, and if I have to go higher I will.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually have a 12” 1963 CTS alNiCo organ pull that is pretty nice, but I don’t see too many 10” alNiCos available online.

I have taken chances before and gotten lucky (for the most part), but I also got feedback beforehand so I wasn’t really “just” taking a chance.

That’s why I am asking here. If I can get a couple of cheap Emi ceramics that sound great with the 1028ALPs it would save me a lot of money and time over blindly experimenting with speakers.

That sounds like it might be a good option, thanks. The speakers I would be using them with are low wattage as well.

The CTS ceramics are what Cezar Diaz would put in SRV supers

Said it's the best 10" ever (but then they needed to go EV for power handling)

Diaz was pretty much saying these are the holy grail

I do like the CTS ceramics, but have always heard that the CTS alnico 10s are the holy grail.

I’m also thinking about simply buying another 2x10 cab for the 1028s, and putting the CTS ceramics back in their original cab.

That might make more sense, and will actually save me some money.

Are you looking for something different than the blueframe alnicos? I have 4 in a BF Super Reverb, paid $175 for the 2nd pair, had to drive an hour to get them and STILL think I got a deal! If you ran both cabs together or had a 4x10, the simple answer would be, get another pair! But if you want 2 separate cabs for 2 separate amps/reasons, I get 2 louder, cleaner ones. Rajin Cajuns, Copperheads, Dr Z blue labels. The blueframe alnicos are awesome, my #1 favorite 10s ever, but they aren't exactly "loud, clean, efficient" speakers. Having the 2 cabs would be almost like having 2 different power/volume levels for the same amp.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I want to be able to use the two 2x10 cabs together or seperately, so they definately need to be “similar” in efficiency. I don’t have a 4x10 cab and don’t want to carry one!

I also have more efficient, higher power handling speakers, so if I need to be louder I already have that covered. These vintage 10s are my “less efficent” speakers.

Right now I can't run both cabs at the same time and that is the main goal. I am fine with 4 of the same speakers, but am also open to the idea of speakers that might compliment the blue frames.

The Sig 10-A is a great speaker, but consider how much breakup you want. The Sig 10A-S has a ribbed cone, instead of smooth, and breaks up later. It’s still a raw, fat tone when driven, but is more capable of clean.

For 10" speakers, look to WGS. I think they do the 10" better than anyone these days.

+1..2nd...or whatever on Warehouse Guitar Speakers. Been very happy with mine and they fairly recently came out on top in a 10" speaker shoot out in Premier Guitar Mag.

I’ve heard good things about WGS, but haven’t tried or heard any.

Do you have any specific recommendations for WGS speakers I should check out that will either contrast/compliment or be very similar to ALP1028s?

I'm not familiar with the 1028's but here's the web page for the speakers.

    Hope this helps!

There are several good options in 10 WGS and their sound samples should help. I love the smooth cone for treble dominate amps (Vintage Gibsons especially) and really like the Green Beret as well.

I would go 3X10 with 2 cts ceramics and the Alk on top (triangle configuration)

3X10s have a sound all their own (more mids)

Do you have a cheap unloaded 3x10 cab available? I’ve never seen one.
