Email from them today announcing their lossless service...

    ==============

To make lossless HD file management free to all, starting December 9th, our free upload limit will change from 3 hours of audio, to 3 hours or 15 tracks. This will not impact existing uploads. Learn how this change might affect you at our Help Center.

    ==============

I guess limiting free accounts more was inevitable.

    What are your thoughts?

Hmm, I guess a lot of my previous Backing Track challenges are going to disappear?

They're forcing us to wipe the slate or pay.

They sound like a business that wants to actually make revenue. The other kind usually don't last.

i'm unsure if the service they provide is really worth paying for.. i know, the way i use it, its not.

i'll have to delete a whole bunch of my tracks (51 currently), assuming i want to upload anything new i create... or... if i decide to actually pay to use their services, i'll have to figure out what they can really do for me that i'm not taking advantage of now. this seems to be the added value a creator will have to decide is 'worth it'

**Unlock SoundCloud Premier features if eligible**
    Earn money for SoundCloud plays
Promote your tracks on SoundCloud to reach new fans
Distribute unlimited releases to all major music services

i'm interested to know what the distribution really looks like.

i'm also interested in the "if eligible" statement, specifically what being eligible entails

Why can't they be like Google and pummel you with targeted ads? Oh....

They've been having revenue issues for a while. I'm surprised that they still offer a free option at all.

I'll move my own content I want to keep over to YouTube and use the 15 slots for challenge tracks and such.

When you move to YouTube, does your file have to be a video format?

I predict an exponential rise in free accounts so that people can post more than 15 songs... unless they limit to one account as well.

I have always wondered why they allowed so many multiple free accounts. To curb the volume of repeat postings and make money they should just charge a small fee like say, a dollar per posting.

Now, if they want to subvert the music industry, they should create fame (or the promise of fame) for their users. They do this by having “The SoundCloud Music Awards” on TV. Anything like the corrupt and politically condescending Grammys, AMAs, etc would quickly disappear and the new path to fame and fortune would become the industry. The public would vote for of the people who enter in each category.
    Something like:
    • Best SC song written in each genre..
    •Best SC vocal performance.
    • Best instrumental performance for each instrument.
    Etc, etc,

Winners would get sponsored to tour and/or record and/or receive a cash prize (paid for by dollar each posting fee as stated above).

This is free advise Sound Cloud! If you need me I’ll be on my couch solving world peace with my iPad...

SoundCloud is easy to link here, but SoundClick is a good alternative.

Yes, but it's pretty easy to take an audio file and build a video from it. The Windows 10 Photos app will to do this automatically as will several other free apps. To do the reverse, you can extract the audio using a converter website.

I should have read that SC email before I binned it!
I just checked my (free) account - I have 20 tracks on there, and a new 'temperature gauge' graphic has appeared that reads '42% to free upload limit'... that's new
Not only that but 2 out of those 20 tracks now have a blue 'HD' label next to them, with a tag that explains 'this file was uploaded in a lossless HD format' ...never seen that before either !
    Now I'm confused

I've been on soundclick for a decade or so (IIRC) and have 20 tunes there as my default upload page.
I like the site fine but I don't do the pay option because (for me) I see no actual benefit and have never actively promoted my material anyway....no one is going to pay for my song writing efforts.

Soundcloud?....I joined there a year or so ago because BIAB uses that site for the their "User Showcase" access.
I only have 10 songs there (one copy tune) so I guess I'm good for 5 more.
That is, if I can turn out 5 more before I croak.

I guess they're trying to stay profitable with new ways to generate revenue....which I will never understand how they do it.

    Back to it....
