    Hi
I just joined and first time owner of a Telecaster. This is my “ new” 60’s customshop heavy relic. I don’t believe this sonic blue colour ever existed in the 60’s did it ? All I know of is a Lake Placid blue, nothing like this. Thanks

John Lennon and George Harrison both had sonic blue Strats. I believe theirs were 62s. I could be wrong on that.

As far as identifying if that particular shade of sonic blue is the same as the original, can't help you there.

But man that guitar is sweeeet! I'd love to have a really well done relic someday.

Sure did, there was Daphne blue as well. Neither very common, but available.

Showing a bit of ignorance here I guess, but I have to ask why with many relics do they have a sunburst finish underneath, are we supposed to imagine that someone refinished a guitar back in the day because they didn’t like the original sunburst ?

I thought many custom color guitars were simply sprayed over something on the line. Wasn’t it determined that Jimi’s red Monterey strat (the one he added to) was an over sprayed sunburst?

welcome to the liveliest tele site on the planet. there's many great people around and they are very generous.
nice guitar that's a nice touch the blue worn away revealing the worn sunburst, man that's Hollywood Horror Show Double Plus Good.

Colors were a custom order, usually a 5% upcharge (and a bit of a wait, that's the bigger reason they're more rare...nobody wanted to wait!). Usually what happened was when someone ordered a color, they sprayed it over a sunburst that got messed up or had an ugly grain or whatever. Saved them from having to get rid of it. Remember, Leo made money not only from being a genius, but also from using every last thing he could without waste

I didn’t buy the guitar due to the colour nor finish- I preferred black actually- I bought it due to the unusual features it has which is good for my jazz - namely: humbucker, reverse bridge pickup and reverse volume tone plate, making the volume easy access for quick volume swells with the pinky. The blue might grow on me

ps- it’s nice having a non Facebook telecaster forum- looking forward to interact more with you all, in the future

I have a 63 Tele I bought in 1972 when I was a kid. It was Sonic Blue. I did a crappy refin job on it, but if you look at the pics in my gallery you can see the original color under the pickguard (I was too lazy to hand sand that since it would be covered - hey i was only 12!)

    Hey Doug
Thanks for the info. Is the picture you posted above the best example from your gallery of the sonic blue ?

I did a quick review of some of the photos in your gallery and saw one of the electronics removed ( volume & tone pots exposed) with a big patch of blue showing below the control plate.

Or should I keep scrolling looking for better examples?

    Ken

Nice looking guitar. I am a secret fan of these darker position markers. I think they are like the old cellulose dots but what do I know.
Sonic is a great classic color.
