Backing vocals in the chorus of "Mary Jane's Last Dance" are awesome. They make something like an Em7add9 (?) chord. Love it.

And Leon Bridges Smooth Sailing. There are some sexy backing vocals in this...

Keef isn't much of a singer on his own but his harmonies are spot on with Mick.

I feel the same way about Emmylou Harris. I don't care for her voice alone but behind someone else she is magic.

Maybe foreground vocals after all, or background vocals to showcase Ry's guitar?

I live the background vocals on this because it has that compressed talking over the pa from the booth on an old recording sound

I assume Lucinda's doing the backing vox on the choruses, but it always gives me chills.

Many many great songs here. And fantastic backings.

might I suggest - fun fun fun by the beach boys

    all of the Queen repertoire.

    All of the bee gees

and the greatest white girl backing Vox of all time - Linda ronstadt and Jennifer warnes on the deeply disturbing excitable boy.

Backing vocals make or break a tune, IMO. Lousy singing will empty a nightclub before your very eyes...

That being said, lately I am liking the "doot doo dot doo" backing vocals on Dan Auerbach's "Shine On Me". To my ear, it comes across as whimsical and the harmonies are spot-on.

The Isley Brothers deserve a LOT more credit than they get from the general public!

I'm not a fan of the over the top backing vocal - Merry Clayton, or Great Gig in the sky, or of the big separate call and response where they repeat the line.

Jet City Woman, How Long (RHCP), Under Cover of Darkness (the Strokes) are less 'great singers doing backup and more nicely written and pretty well executed - something I can aspire to, rather than Linda Rondstat and JAmes Taylor doing backup!

I do like Chrissie Hynde filling in on Elvis Costello's "Satellite" from Spike in that category though!

He has a lot of fun with the backing vox on Young Americans, collaborating with Luther Vandross.

“Sister Golden Hair” by America. Makes me happy to be a back-up singer.
