Which songs do you really enjoy because of the excellent background vocals?

Of course we can't forget Merry Clayton's contributions on The Rolling Stone's Gimme Shelter.

Then there are the incredible vocals from Clare Torrey on Pink Floyd's The Great Gig in the Sky.

And maybe something a little more obscure, Eric Clapton's Get Ready with Yvonne Elliman.

What are some of your favorite background vocals?

Also here are a couple of great interviews with Merry Clayton and Clare Torrey talking about their experiences recording those songs... some wonderful insights.

Oh man that is such a great song!

I looked it up, the background singers for that song are a group named Thunderthighs, which I think is a hilarious name. :D

    Good stuff...

I always like hearing Linda pipe up in the background vocals in James Taylor's rendition of "Bartender's Blues".

At the 1:00 mark when they sing "Frere Jacques" in the background:

Simon and Garfunkel's overdubs on The Only Living Boy in New York.

The Beach Boys on God Only Knows.

Hound Dog Taylor's shouts of encouragement as Brewer Phillips rips a solo.

Bowie was a great lead vocalist, but I always thought that backup vocals were where he really shined.

    Other than some already mentioned:

Mick Jagger On "You're so Vain"

Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor on "Heart of Gold":

When they come in, both add whole new layers to already great tracks.
