The sound of Steve Hackett's part in the final section of Supper's Ready always makes me think of heaven........ (from about the 20 minute point!!)

There are so many killer tones, but here are the first two I thought of:
The lead tone in the Black Crowes version of Hard To Handle, and the Strat tone in Dorina, by Dada. Both are masterful in tone and technique.
Hey man, thank you for mentioning the band Dada. It must have been 20 years since I've last listened to them, but today I've listened through those first two albums, twice, and they still sound so, so great. Incredible how many great band/players drift out of your head, isn't it? But, sincerely, I really appreciate your putting them back on my radar. Cheers!

Can we celebrate some Sonny Landreth?

How ‘bout Tab Benoit

EDIT: Maybe not fair to Tab, but JLH with Ry:

It’s one thing to aspire to tonehood in the studio, but another to produce it live.

Man, back when South of I-10 was first released, I was flipping through a local scene "zine" on a Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio when I stumbled across this tiny, one paragraph blurb that mentioned that Sonny was going to be playing at some downtown watering hole at 8:00 THAT EVENING. Mind you, this was at a little past 6:30/lol. So, a friend and I shot downtown, walked downstairs to this basement bar, only to find that the place was absolutely crammed full with what turned out to be just their regular weekend crowd. It was this super long, VERY narrow rectangular room. I thought we were going to be out of luck, but then my friend said "Just act like we belong here" and the two of us went and stood INSIDE one of the speaker columns. This put us less than ten feet from the red knob Fender twin that was sitting next to a mic stand. Ten minutes later, in comes Sonny, gig bag over his shoulder. He nodded to us, we nodded back, he unzipped his gig bag, pulled a maple neck Strat with one of those Hipshot Triology bridges, placed an MXR Dynacomp and one of those Mesa V-Twin tube distortion pedals on top of the Twin. He then spent a couple of moments with a tuner, flipped on the Twin, tapped the microphone and said "Hey, I'm Sonny Landreth and I'm gonna play a few tunes for your folks. This was pre-internet days, and I'd never seen Sonny play, only listened to the albums. To say that I had zero comprehension of how he was pulling those sounds out of his guitar doesn't isn't begin to cover how flabbergasted I was. He ended up playing about and hour, just him and his guitar, and I'll never forget how glorious it all was.

I Just Want to Make Love to You - Foghat
It’s 1973 and live, so probably a Strat or two into full stacks of some sort.

One Way Out - Allman Brothers
Again it’s live, so probably a LP or SG into Marshall full stacks.

Too Much to Lose
Amen!
My favorite tone.
Alas, not my tone, but the tone that still connects most, uh, viscerally with me.
Dickey, Duane, Peter, Eric, Billy, Mick, Martin, Joe, all those guys.

P.S.
I had the immense pleasure of being part of the Headhunters’ opening act, twice.
First time was in 1988 at the Texas State Fair, and in 1994 in Prince George, BC.
Killer band, nice guys, too.

Robin Trower had a college gig in my home town, around '73/'74. My buddy and I sneaked into the sound check, in a cavernous sports hall, with fantastic acoustics. Robin liked them, too- because he played for nearly an hour, whilst the other band members came and went.....
Better than the gig.

Trower is a master of Strat tone!
