First was Clapton with Mayall, then Beck, and I thought Page was okay sometimes. Jimi was good once he got his own studio. Duane!! And Rev. Gibbons. I think though, the greatest classic rock tone every recorded was Humble Pie's "Rockin' the Fillmore". It must be loud.

There are so many killer tones, but here are the first two I thought of:
The lead tone in the Black Crowes version of Hard To Handle, and the Strat tone in Dorina, by Dada. Both are masterful in tone and technique.

Greetings from Sunny New Jersey
My chase-worthy tones... both players with wonderful timing and feel and a beautiful sounding rig. Just drives me crazy - wanna sound like this. Or somewhere in the vicinity... county... state... time zone. Please!

The incredible Jennifer Turner:

And the understated playing and big and buzzy sound of Brian Blush:

My gods are not flashy. They sexy.

Always loved the guitar tones on Running on Empty by Jackson Browne, good slide too. Not sure who the guitarist(s) were but the tone was magical. Warm and summery:

And this. Stained Class by Judas Priest. Beatiful guitar tones, IMO the best on any Priest album.

Carnival was one of those songs that was childhood wallpaper for me so I never noticed the filthy (good) guitar tone until this thread.

Refreshments also a great sounding band.
