@jdgladw - Tar - talk about a “deep dusty”
I got to live in Chicago for some years back in the 90s and got to see them a lot (Empty Bottle, Lounge Ax, Metro, etc.). Always loved their shows. Over and Out, their final album, came out when I was living there and it, along with Shellac's At Action Park and the two seven inches, Silkworm's Firewater, and U.S. Maple's Long Hair in Three Stages wired my brain for a certain guitar sound. It's the sound of a strong fundamental note surrounded by an agitated, metalic swarm, both parts being distinct but working in tandum. It is still the kind of electric guitar sound i'm chasing today.

These are but a few of my all time benchmarks of tone:

One of my all time favorites comes form these old Hiwatt amps.

When Eric goes to the "A" chord at the chorus, it just gets me every time. All the chorus chords really. The verses sound like the speakers are about to rip which is also so cool... I will sometimes turn the balance on my stereo over to the full left to hear mainly the guitar. Wow.

There are just so many great Hendrix tones, and though I tend to like the earlier germanium Fuzz Face tones over the later silicon best, there is something about this mix and performance that I can't get enough of.

Clem Clempson’s tone on Humble Pie’s 30 Days In The Hole, and Ronnie Wood’s tone on I’m Losing You by the Faces I both perfectly fit the songs.

So essentially everything ever played on guitar then, skimming the thread?

I'm actually pretty comfortable with that.

Guitars just sound good, man.

I'm sure once I post this I'll be flooded with counterexamples, but I really believe it's difficult-to-impossible to come up with a crap, piss-poor, bad guitar tone.

Context will change that, but on its own? Guitars always sound awesome.
