John Martyn can always make me feel emotional.

John's song 'Solid Air' about his friend Nick Drake always makes me get the old lump in the throat...

and this gets me every time...

"I built my dreams around you..." It's a tear jerker. Also, how many songs have the hook played on a penny whistle?

This one really pulls on the heart strings if you know the story of Billie Joe and Eddie. God rest both their souls.

A lot of this album... (which is my second favourite album ever)

.. and by the time I get to this one, I'm in bits, every time, without fail.

After not hearing it for many years I put on James Brown's I Feel Good, and that key and timing change hit me so hard I cried. Maybe those aren't the kind of tears you're looking for. I don't know.

I can’t even with this one. Both times I’ve heard Shane sing it live it’s been a struggle. The whole verse before that line, just brutal. “I could’ve been someone... ‘well so could anyone... you took my dreams from me when I first found you’” etc.

Dirty Old Town’s another by them. Came up here the other day I think. Opening bit Body of an American too, but probably because I associate it with the police wakes in “The Wire.”
