According to the National Coalition for the Homeless 20 to 25% of the homeless folks in America suffer from some form of severe mental illness.

I see that 1 in 5 americans suffer from mental illness and 1 in 25 from a serious mental illness...

.2% of americans are homeless.... 30% of all Syrians are homeless. Nigeria has the most people who are homeless 24 million. the US has about 580K homeless (so, about half the population of San Jose, CA, the 10th largest city in the US)

Patches on my patches, on my old blue Jeans,
Well they used to be blue, when they used to be new, when they used to be clean,

She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft --Jerry Reed
Wharf Rat -- Grateful Dead
Coal Miner's Daughter -- Loretta Lynn

...and thousands of others. Not like the odds of being a well-to-do singer/songwriter are any better than being an NBA star, and most songwriters write what they know about. So being broke is almost as ubiquitous a topic as getting dumped, etc.

And it only takes one to inspire a sad song.
