Well these days, having a big ego and carrying yourself as if you're the best thing since sliced bread is the way to score a number one single. But there's also enough songs out there where the protagonist doesn't really dare to walk towards the one who they have a crush on.

    Let's talk about those songs.

    First up

And here's the band themselves, about the song what it truly is about.

Then we have the simply stunning "Angel eyes"

I know it's a John Hiatt song but the Jeff Healey version is just so flipping GOOD. That story of the shy, invisible guy at the high school dance who managed to get the most desirable girl in school, it's a fantasy I bet we all had.

Speaking of songs about the shy, invisible guy getting the most unobtainable girl.

Prince was no stranger when it comes to writing sexy songs but very few of them are about that one kid who simply can't believe the situation he found himself in. But the girl is assuring him, he doesn't need to worry, she'll teach him everything he needs to know.

As far as my interpretation goes, she's been hurt by the guy and wants him to come back but is far too proud to admit it. It's that feeling of loneliness and abandonment when the one you like and want so badly is no longer in your life. You wish they were feeling the same pain and would come back to you. It's hard to admit you miss someone once they've hurt and left you, though. Who wants to beg? I love the ending line, "But if you do, don't you know, that I don't mind." She's finally revealing how much she truly hopes and wants him to come back.

This line "you're not the only one that I know" is the way of trying to trick the guy and everyone else into thinking she's not upset about it and will easily move on.

Almost anything by the Weepies (love em’) or Suzanne Vega (love her, too).

    Here's some more.

The funny thing is that the Red Hot Chili Peppers back when this song was recorded in 1991, were known for their high energy music and ditto shows. But their "BloodSugarSexMagic" album began to show a more mature side of the band. Singer Anthony Kiedis had a fling with Sinead O'Connor, a woman who he described as being "Way beyond his reach." That feeling of "Oh god, what have I gotten myself into?" very much apparent in his delivery. Kiedis said that he wanted to play the song for Sinead in person but he couldn't bring himself to actually do so.

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned this one yet but here it is.

But that not every song which is about introvert protagonists not daring to make a move has to sound morose is proven by the next to songs. First up, here's Whitney Houston.

And here's the biggest hit of the Dutch new wave band Toontje Lager (A note below) with a translation of what the lyrics say.

    Stiekem gedanst (Danced in secret)

I just stood there, just drinking and hanging around
I contemplated and looked around, let my thoughts run about
There was nobody there who'd catch me if I were falling
Nobody standing out, nobody in particular.

Three A.M. the seventh of January
Panther striped top and her blue jeans
Her arms bare and her short black spiky hairdo
As I was standing in a corner

I danced with you in secret
I hope that you liked it
I danced with you in secret
    Danced in secret

I don't think that you noticed me watching you
I was that boy with that vague look in his eyes
I was that boy who wanted to appear to be loose
Not too innocent but also not that thick

I danced with you in secret
I hope that you liked it
I danced with you in secret
    Danced in secret

    I danced without actually moving
And with a grace like you wouldn't believe
Maybe I might run into you tomorrow
But on the other hand, perhaps it's better if I don't.

I danced with you in secret
I hope that you liked it
I danced with you in secret
    Danced in secret

Err... That song is not about introversion, it's actually about Beck making fun about his own rapping capabilities, the lyrics by design don't make sense.

Just because you don't understand the lyrics doesn't mean he wrote them to not make sense. I have no problem understanding them. :)

Belle and Sebastian made a career out of songs from an introvert's POV. Just a few of their classic examples:

Well then, let's have the man himself explain the message behind the song...

"I'd be banging away on a Son House tune and the whole audience would be talking, so maybe out of desperation or boredom, or the audience's boredom, I'd make up these ridiculous songs just to see if people were listening. 'Loser' was an extension of that. The raps and vocals are all first takes. If I’d known the impact it was going to make, I would have put something a little more substantial in it. When [Producer Carl Stephenson] played it back, I thought, 'Man, I'm the worst rapper in the world, I'm just a loser.' So I started singing 'I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me."
    - Beck

So, nonsensical lyrics to see if the people who played the song were actually paying attention to what it was they were listening to and a chorus in which he berated his own rapping, that was what this song is about.
