I was thinking about Hip Hop - would it be a step too far for The King, or could he have done De La Soul ?
I don't think his delivery can be fast enough. He wouldn't fit with "*$%! The Police" or "Fight The Power".

    Or would he....

Don't blame me, it was the alcohol!

About 15 years ago I was hanging out at a record store in London that a pal of mine used to run. A customer had been in trying to sell all his Elvis LPs and my pal bought all the 1950s and 60s LPs but passed on the 1970s LPs as he felt they would be too difficult to sell on. After the customer had left the store, a few of us had glasses of wine on the go and we had started chatting about Elvis. It turned out none of us were really Elvis fans, we all loved his voice and delivery, but felt on the whole he didn't get the best material after '71 or thereabouts. The guys were saying "Oh, he should have sung more Tony Joe White numbers" or "Elvis should have signed to Motown" and stuff like that. (Actually, Motown in the 70s might have been a smart move for Elvis artistically now that I think about it)

Anyhow. I imagined what Elvis would have done with "Break On Through" by The Doors. And it just came to me in a moment of alcohol-inspired clarity - Elvis should have joined The Doors. The rest of the evening was spent playing Doors records on the in-store system and singing along Elvis-style over the top.

The Doors and Elvis have been linked in my mind ever since.

    Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark

Imagine Elvis instead of Kenny Rogers doing Islands in the Stream with Dolly. Epic.

    Night Moves

Maybe Petty’s Here Comes My Girl. Or Southern Accents.

Yoakam was mentioned previously, albeit erroneously. But what about Thousand Miles From Nowhere or Fast as You?

    Maybe Legs by ZZ Top...

    Ah... I gotta disagree. Totally.

If this had gone down, there wouldn’t have been any more Doors music, and if there had been, it would have been cheesy. Morrison’s strength wasn’t as a vocalist, it was as a writer. Elvis was a lot of things, but a decent writer wasn’t one of them.

I guess he could have fronted the band singing everything that was already written and released. But creatively they’d have been done whether he stepped in or not.

I don’t think Elvis wrote many of his own songs at all.
Luckily Morrison left a stack of poetry behind and a bunch of unfinished lyrics. Somebody could’ve done something with that to serve up to Elvis.

He had a knack of turning others songs into his own ...

There are times when Morrison could croon like Elvis too....

I don't think that was the King. Leonard Cohen wrote the song in 1984 (7 years after Elvis's death).
