Fat Mike always uses a pick
Apparently Tom Fowler used a pick during his tenure with Frank Zappa. E.g. "Inca Roads". Scott Thunes (Frank's later bassist) described this as an "ugly" sound but he liked it anyway.
I started playing with a pick when I started bass because using your fingers requires you to gradually build up calluses and if you play too hard one night at the blues jam you'll get a blister and be out of commission for awhile.
I only play at home any more and mostly use fingers now.
