Thank You. Probably a bit too close, but the eagle chose to land in the tree I was standing under. I was trying to avoid getting too close to the nest in that area by taking a loop trail that skirts the edge of the preserve. This eagle flew in and landed and didn't seem phased in the least.. I would say probably 40-50 feet up in the tree. These are cropped in some after the fact to get away from all the branches.Stunning photographs.
Out of interest, how close are you to the birds to get a shot like that?
People here are very excited about what's been happening over the past 10 years as Eagles repopulate our island. Every year the numbers increase as does the number of nests. It's actually starting to get hard to not see them if you are alert . 10 years ago, it would be a major achievement to find an eagle, much less a nestBeautiful photos and stunning birds!
I grew up in northern Indiana in the 80s and 90s. Never saw an eagle in my life until last summer I was back visiting some cousins. There were two in a large tree at the lake. I was absolutely blown away. So huge and beautiful. I really couldn’t believe my eyes. They seemed old hat to the people I was with. Didn’t seem to remember a time not that long ago when they were virtually non existent.
When I was a kid they we’re supposed to be going extinctBeautiful photos and stunning birds!

Now right down the way from me there is an eagle Mecca that people flock to to take photos and watch them
They're actually getting fairly common in upper Hoosierlandia these days. We did an Audubon field trip last month and saw several at Salamonie - some other people said they saw about 30 a little further down the river. And occasionally we see one working a road kill on a back road.Beautiful photos and stunning birds!

Isn’t it fantastic what a bit of awareness about the effects of certain chemicals 50 years or more can do to rectify a situation? If any of y’all want to see a multitude of bald eagles, get yerself to Homer, Alaska and go out to the tip of the Homer Spit. I’ve never seen anything like it, eagles almost to the point of nuisance bird. Groups of 30-50 just sitting around on the beach. Presumably well fed from the leftovers of the halibut fleet harbored a few hundred meters away.

That's when the photographers get glued to their viewfinds, it's only a matter of a short time before they go after they goVery cool! Beware standing slightly behind them. You know what they like to do prior to taking wing.....![]()
