UPS stopped by yesterday, and I wasn't home
When you are, let us know what you think of it.
Got it for well below what you generally see them go for...as I do everything, really. That's why I've got so much cool stuff
shoot, that's awesome! I need that superpower...
it just takes patience and persistence, in my experience
Ya, try with a single coil and a bucker if you can let us know
Seems a punchy boost..wonder how it would compare to
a treble boost
it's kinda funny how there's been an explosion of sorts in recreating bits of preamps (Echoplex, Roland Space Echo, Schaffer-Vega Wireless) from gear certain specific reknowned artists used, that someone has decided is an essential part of the magic dust in the signal chain
yep we'll see, I'll letcha know what I think
Very curious where it ends up in your chain. If I already didn't have a blues breaker and boost (Coppersound FoxCatcher) in the first-is slot, the Storm would have ended up there. I have had it at the end of the chain, to goose the amp some more and keep the signal coming off the board more consistent (the limiter part of it) but since getting the treble booster, I haven't turned the Storm on. I haven't used much else since getter the treble booster.
The Storm is a great pedal - don't see it going anywhere. I bought it mostly for the limiter part of the pedal, because I like it way better than any compressor I heard. The preamp is nice too but wasn't my primary reason for getting it.
I have received it but I've not had a chance to try it out yet.
Still no chance but there'll be time this weekend I imagine
I'll be curious as Aion Electronics released a clone trace which I've started building. Unfortunately I need a few parts including an optocoupler which I won't be able to get for awhile (Small Bear has them but they're in NYC). Cool design, and I'm an absolute boost nut.
@blowtorch mentioned in another thread how so many preamp designs from classic gear are being released and just saw VHT also has a clean FET boost that is the preamp from the Dumble ODS. Pretty cool, of course I'd like to try them all, but the VHT is surprisingly inexpensive if you look around (Elderly for $65):
Yep I saw that awhile back, looks interesting
Looks like Allied and various eBay sellers have the NSL-32. And there seems to be an even bigger selection, at mostly lower prices, if you go with the VTL5C3 instead.
I didn't realize that Aion released their Gale project late last fall. Looks to be pretty cool. As a plus, it looks like all the Aion projects are 25% off up through this Monday (3/23).
I'm thinking I may grab some of those VTL5C3s just to have them handy.
For those who need pics, here is one
so it def adds something very nice to your sound.
so does my Nocturne Atomic Brain pedal, which is a reconstructed preamp from the Roland Space Echo (I'm actually using the Nocturne Mystery Brain these days, which still includes that circuit)
There is something to this stuff, guys
That is a very good and accurate way of putting it. Any thoughts on the limiter?
Ha ha yeah not very descriptive of me, sorry about that. It can be hard to put these sounds into words that translate what you hear.
And well that limiter certainly does act like a compressor, doesn't it. Not in that ticky clackity way that a lot of specific guitar compressors do, but, it does seem to sound more "open" with the limiter knob turned way down. I'm sure it comes in handy in certain situation, for taming some broader brushes of frequencies.
I def do need to spend more time with it to understand how everything (boost, level, limiter) interacts
Do you know if the NSL-32 was in the original, or just specified by the Aion work-alike circuit? The VTL5C3 has greater that 10X difference in response time, and would likely have an effect in the circuit.
Both types are mentioned in the build docs, though the notes say the NSL-32 was from the trace. I might have a VTL5C3 in my parts stash but I thought they had different specs too.
Also, I've wondered if the limiter is anything like the one in my Fulltone 2B boost. There's a dynamics control that brings in germanium diodes, I like what it does with single coils into my Vox AC4.
Just to make sure it's to spec, I went and ordered some NSL-32s. I went ahead and ordered a Gale (and a couple of other things) last night, taking advantage of Aion's (no affil.) 25% off discount.
