    But halfway between isn't the same as one or the other. If one song needs a classic single coil sound & another song needs a semi hollow HB sound, in-between is a compromise for either. & that's why we all have such bad G.A.S.

    However, there is most definitely a solid place for the 72 Thinline.

    Keith originally had the humbucker the regular way, somewhere along the line it got turned around ad now it’s back to the regular way again. I can’t answer the tone circuit questions but he does mostly use teles for five string and Gibson’s for six string standard or open d or open e tunings. He does have a couple teles still in standard tuning

    Perhaps Keith prefers the combination of a WRHB with a good Tele bridge pickup? Gritty and bright, with fat and bright. That middle position? With a four control layout? To know it is to love it...….;)

    I haven't posted much lately, but for old time sakes I'll respond to a Sonny Wolf post.

    Here's my thoughts:

    Keith had Micawber buckered by the time he strolled into that shop in Texas and bought the black Custom right? So we can assume he liked that combo of the stock tele bridge and humbucker neck so he saw that as a winning combo. I think I've also heard that he was influenced by Leo Nocentelli who has a Custom so he may have been looking for that particular model.

    He will sure have played one

    Some people just don't click with some things. Casino is a great guitar I bet he tried, but it was more used by Beatles

    Notice that Keith uses his black Tele custom with regular Tele single coil bridge pickups in the first video but plays a Humbucker Gibson in the second video...both are the same song 'How I wish'and he still sounds like Keith with either guitar.

    From personal experience, I can tell you that those pickups were relatively lifeless compared to what Gibson was offering at the time.
    In the 70's I was playing a Les Paul Custom and thought I would add a Fender to my herd (of one), and the Tele generally had a good reputation.
    But, I only needed a week to hear how dissapointing this thing was. It no longer sounded like a Tele, and I had everything else covered with the Les Paul. I traded for a standard Tele and never looked back.

    @Obelisk

    I found this that states his famous black Tele custom bought in San Antonio in 1975 is a 1972 model.
