Be warned about the dangers of the ukulele :

1) They breed
2) They're fun to plink about on
3) There's a very real danger your Telecasters will get jealous
4) Your guitar playing will improve

You may start with an alto, then a tenor will arrive. A second tenor joins it, but with a low G instead of reentrant. Maybe a soprano, but in mandolin tuning. Perhaps that Koa/Sapeli/Zebra/Cypress topped model... It is a new avenue of GAS.
Funny you mention mandolin tuning. That crossed my mind too.

Ain't anything more wrong with ukes than there is with guitars.

This is one of my favorite uke performances ever. It's well over 20 years old, the picture and sound aren't anything to write home about, but the performance cooks. This is three guys playing at a community college, so nothing fancy. The players are, left to right, Jake Shimabukuro, Aldrine Guerrero and Ryan Esaki. Guerrero and Ryan Esaki went on to co-found Ukulele Underground, which has a forum that's the uke equivalent of TDPRI. Good eggs, all three of 'em.

My mistake would be a banjo. Wife said NO. I suggested a ukulele but they aren't headphone safe like electric. I already drive her crazy.

So how is your Hawaiian portfolio going?

i can understand the no on a banjo, you can't play it silently.
if i had to choose between a nylon ukulele ore a electric with reason of playing silent i would recommend nylon.

my former wife had Hyperacusis. some sounds noise literally hurt her where others had no problem. this was not a problem about volume but the kind of sound.
so i could not strum on a electric guitar without using an amp.
only way was playing in a other room and using a GNX multi effect on headphone.

if i had to find a workaround in your case it would be to use a plank style ukulele with nylon and a multi effect with headphone output

Good for you, there are no bad or uncool instruments.

I can say this with conviction, mature well–adjusted adult that I am – although f___ that particular recorder I was forced to learn on in music class in high school. 🙊

There are songs that are irrationally satisfying on ukelele. My current fave is Radiohead’s Creep.

My wife is a Radiohead nut.
Me playing 'Creep' on a uke is a good way to mildly annoy her. Just enough to have caused 'Will you at least play it on a guitar!' to have been uttered.
She's gorgeous when she's mildly irked.

She doesn't mind it quite so much on a tenor, but a plinky soprano... :)

'Stairway To Heaven' got a firm 'No Stairway!' from her. Stairway denied.

Anything in the vein of Bo Diddley is satisfying too.

My (then) girlfriend, now my wife, bought me a ukulele when we were dating on Oahu, in 1997 or 1998.
It's a larger than usual one, a Prelude Custom model C, and it would be considered a Tenor Ukulele.
18 frets.

I have played it at a variety of gigs, and at the old folk's home a few times.

Fun stuff.

If it was good enough for George Harrison, it's good enough for me.

Ukeleles always make me think of these two clips, both involving George:

1:50 into this clip:

Naturally, I got the Dhani Harrison signature ukelele.
