So, I think I'm going to try my luck at building a Jazzcaster. This will be my first guitar build.

This came in earlier today. It's a 4 piece pine body from a guy here in NC. Looks great and it's actually dried wood. DiMarzio pickups, Wilkinson bridge and a Mightly Mite rosewood neck.

Any ideas for a beginner friendly finish?

The friendliest finish is just boiled linseed oil (BLO). Apply a fresh coat every year or so. There is True Oil which is more of a finish but it just wipes on.

For colors, the touch up spray cans at the automotive stores covered with a clear nitro works pretty well.

The Tele is Alder with a light stain and BLO. The amp is pine with a light stain and BLO.

Zinsser spray (aerosol) shellac looks great on pine. Top coat of clear nitro if you like.

I've been thinking about one of these - good luck and have fun.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Did you use and wood conditioner before staining for the pine cabinet?

No. It is a fairly light stain so it didn't blotch like dark stains. Iirc, I mixed some BLO in with the stain. Try it on some scrap first and see how it reacts.

Rustins Danish Oil, has some wax in it so the oil will not stay sticky like some do.
Rustin has some dye to use and give it another transparent color to.

did you ever used a spraycan and did that work for you, then why not?
Are you in a way creative with paint, try decorative painting techniques like i did on a plywood banjo
