So I went to Guitar Center and found a guitar. They cannot sell it untill a certian date. I'm going to try to go back after the date and get it. It looks expensive. It was used for a great price. I will tell you more info on it later. How many have found a guitar and after the date they can sell it go back and buy it? And what was it? The guitar I saw is not on the site just yet.

I've done it a few times. Deluxe Tele, Custom Shop LP, Fender Reverb Chamber RI. When I was building my herd of guitars and amps I used to check the local GC a couple times a week to get to the gear that doesn't hit the website. Also, if you really want the guitar, put down some money to hold it so when it comes off hold, you don't lose it.

Can you not “reserve” said instrument? I have seen those tags on pedals there. I shudder to think these are layaways that are being pre-re-sold...(that’s a word)!

Well I might get something else. And family did not want to reserve it. Just come after the holding date and buy it. It is their money. And a free gift to me. So I'm not knocking it.

I've bought many guitars from GC that were still on police hold. You can buy them anytime, just can't take them home right away.

wait, you went to Guitar Center and found a guitar? How long did it take you? :D

Really, I just want to hear the end of the story. It's kind of mean to keep us all in suspense like this...:)

What's up with this "can't sell" tag? I've never seen one of those. Why are they used?

When GC takes in a used guitar they are put on hold for a certain period to research whether they might be stolen goods or not. (Not sure how they research it though). The hold period used to be a month but I just bought a used Casino recently and the hold period was only one week. I knew that I wanted it so I paid for it the day I found it and picked it up a week later.

You can put it on layaway and pay the rest off later.

I found a nice used Strat at GC in San Jose, during one visit. Had to leave it, as my vacation was almost over. I didn't understand the legal situation but it made sense, when explained to me.
More annoying was the D35 I spent 40 minutes with, at an otherwise excellent shop in northern England. When I took it to the counter, credit card in hand, they told me someone had reserved it. There were no tags on the instrument to let me know this salient fact. Just my luck, when the nicest guitar in the rack is unobtainable.....

I went into Guitar Center with my brother in law and wasn't looking for a guitar but saw a used Richie Kotzen telly they were looking over. They said it just came through the door not 1 hour ago. It was a great looking guitar and it had a big neck on it. I played it for a few minutes amd bought it and walked out the door with it and a case.

The hold period doesn't involve GC doing research on whether an item is stolen. It just gives time for someone it might have been stolen from to file a report with the police, and for that paperwork to reach GC. I had to wait two weeks for a pedal to clear that way. I swiped my credit card to put a hold on it, but the card wasn't actually charged until the waiting period ended. Then I went in and picked it up.

You're supposed to pay for it and they'll store it in back until the police hold date.

Then you go pick it up. It happens to me a lot with pedals.

Call them now (credit card in hand!). Someone else might buy it!

I had to return to pick up this $12 uke after paying for it and watching it get carried into the secret back room storage area!

    Yes, that makes sense.

If the original poster is truly interested in the guitar in question, there is no risk to putting a deposit on it to hold it. It doesn't lock you into buying it if you find something else in the meantime and change your mind. You'll get your deposit back.

Did Chumley carry it back there, to the "back room." Gonna log off now. Nice uke.

The laws on holding equipment bought from private sellers vary from state to state. My state has no hold law, so you can buy it as soon as GC pays the person.
