    KTR.

Should be here in a week or so.

Is there anything I should know ahead of time before I, ya know... formulate an opinion using my own ears?

    :D

It's a good OD for sure. My advice is to use it and don't keep it in a box! Play around with the settings and have fun.

Great ODs, passed one a couple of weeks back because I had other things that did that, but if it fills an unoccupied niche in your tonal spectrum then great! The only thing I noticed about it was to be careful of your amp eq as it can sound very nasal with the wrong amp settings no matter what you do with tone control. And it likes being a clean.boost more than a med od

I'm sorry but $400 for a boost? That's insane. Some people's rigs cost less than those pedals. I had a klon clone and wasn't impressed.

Try to match it to to the sweet spot of your amp when it starts to break up. This is where it shines. My Drive is usually around 10:00, Volume adjusted to unity or more if you want a little boost. And Tone set for taste.

As I said its best application is mimicking an amp that's starting to break up, but is too loud for must applications. So you can get that tone at lower levels and still have clean headroom. Just experiment. But in my opinion having the Drive over 12:00 is not great. But it's not intended to be an overdrive pedal really.

I use to have an original golden horsey, sold it many years ago and now have a JHS Klone, which to my ears is a near perfect replication.

Yeah, the drive of the pedal itself was too nasally for my taste.
But enjoy giving it a go.
My only real advice is to force yourself to play with it for at least a month. Keep it long enough to learn it fully, and then decide whether or not it's for you.

I'm really enjoying a NEA Klon clone I just picked up. Didn't love it on one amp, don't want to stop playing it on another. Play around with it a bit before making any decisions.

Having a positive or negative opinion of a Klon is a risky proposition.

I'm sorry, but how do you know he paid that much, and that he'd just be using it for a boost?

Fair question - but it is also a fair assumption - if only because that's what they cost, and that's (mainly) what they are renowned to do well.
