But do you know about living in the plastic age?
How about the original version by Bruce Woolley & the Camera Club
I saw them in 1979, supporting XTC, with a young Thomas Dolby on keyboards.
Always loved that tune.
I was completely unaware of this......and I blame MTV...(not the VCR!)
It's a version of the song. Trevor Horn and Bruce Woolley wrote the song together with Geoff Downes when they were all members of the Buggles. Bruce did leave and form Camera Club and record it first but the Buggles version isn't a cover.
I didn't say it was a cover, but Bruce Woolley recorded it first.
I know that he co-wrote it.
The gig was strange as the ticket said 'plus special guests'. The support act came out & after 3 songs, some wag in the audience shouted 'Who are you?'.
The singer said 'Bruce Woolley & the Camera Club' & we were all non the wiser. But I remembered 'Video Killed the Radio Star'.
And then a few months later the Buggles version was released.
The "official" Buggles version improves on this version of Wooley's, quite a bit.
The sparser more economical instrumentation, the inclusion of more soaring bgnd vox, and of course the more prominent "ooo-ahh-ooo"s.
Great song still, no matter how you slice it
Bruce's is a little more punky and Buggles is (a lot) more slick. Both are great. Buggles even had a follow up album that has essentially vanished from consciousness.
New DNA Evidence Exonerates Video in Landmark Murder Case of Radio Star
That's just brilliant......I'm glad justice has prevailed!
Yeah I got that one. It was called Drama, and it had Steve Howe, Chris Squire and Alan White on it...
Whaddaya mean, that wasn't what you meant? It had I Am A Camera on it!
Here is the actual video that killed The Radio Stars -
Well dang, now we are back at square one with this thing.
Ironically I think youtube killed the video star. I tend to not even watch music videos, just listen to them. And listen to a whole lot of full albums with just a photo of the cover.
I always suspected Autotune killed the radio star...
I've seen the Radio Stars.. twice while I was in London 77/78....
didn't know they even had a video to be killed by....
YES!!! we've got a video...
