I see you are in an apartment and may not have access to a workshop. Even if you just used a patio, with pretty simple tools you could probably do something like I did if you want to stick with an 8" speaker. This is a converted wine crate that you can buy from Total Wine or a similar large distributor for about $10. They often have box joint corners. Because one panel was thin, I lined it with lauan plywood using brads. Drilled and added dark wood dowels and glued all the corners. Made the baffle from Baltic plywood. Then installed a Celestion TF0818 that I found used for $30 shipped. This speaker is used in some Quilter combos and packs a wallop. I put a solid back on the box, but made it so I could remove half.

When looking for an unloaded cabinet, I usually start with Seismic…I’ve had good luck with their 12” cabs.

A few notable loaded cabs that I own and like…noting the RG8 at the bottom is the only one that ranks as “inexpensive”:

DV Mark Jazz 208 2x8…great sound…neo…I have two.
-300w
-22.04lb
-8ohm mono/16ohm stereo
-60Hz to 8KHz
There was a period of time when these popped on SDoD for $200.

DV Mark NeoClassic 112 Small…great sound…bright until broken in.
-150w
-DV Pearl neo speaker
-8ohm
-18.3lb

Egnater Tweaker 112x…50w 16ohm. I have two…a little bright, but still breaking them in.

Randal RG8 8”…I’ve had this one a while, but don’t use it much so probably not broken in yet. But it is a sleeper and surprises me every time I do with a pretty big sound.

The HBs are reasonably priced…I have a 2x12…but the 1x12s are likely the same quality and look like the same speakers (two speaker choices last I looked).

Happy Hunting.

My adventures in small speaker experimenting has been driven by other interests, namely what is the smallest cab I can travel with and get a useable sound. I have the Hotone cabinet, many variations of things like the Blackstar mini amps. 3 different shades of Ear Candy 2x6 cabs, The 8" Randall (sealed), the 8" Vox (open), a "custom" weber 8" (open), several 1x6 and 1x4 cabs (home hifi cabinets) with Eminence Alphas and other Pro PA drivers and a few 2x8 cabinets.

If you are not wanting to drag your big amp around... the Vox 1x8 is small and can get loud, putting a Weber in it would make a big difference, no matter what style you play. At that point though you are way ahead $$ to get the smallest 1x12 you can find, then call it a day. If cost is not a problem, the DV Mark Little Jazz is unbelievably good and would take the pre out of your heads easily.
I have the Vox and really like it. It's deep and ported and has relatively good bass. I wouldn't say it sounds like a 12" or 10", but it sounds good in its own way.

It's not that loud. I was able to crank my Greta though it, something which I was not able to do with other cabs, not because of neighbors but because it hurts my ears.

When I can be louder, I also like to pair it with a 12" cab, gives a fuller sound and adds to both cabs.

Simple as that. I have two small amps (Orange Micro Terror and Hotone Diamond Mojo) but I need a cab to play them through so that I don’t necessarily have to tote my good amp. I tried the Orange 8” back when I bought my Micro, but recall being unimpressed.

What you folks suggest?
A Monoprice 1 x 10 or 1x12 perhaps. What qualities of a cab would impress you ?

Nice. That would even match my bare pine PRII!
My solution: Pine DIY
(now the cab is all white!)
Yeah, I’m toying with the idea of DIY. I have a (crowded) garage, but it’s full of other projects I need to get to.

Portable and not crappy-sounding. :p All kidding aside, I’m not looking for glorious tone, I just don’t want the speaker to make me sound any worse. I’m not playing over a drummer, or trying to fill a large room with sound. The loudest amp I’ll be competing with is a 12” combo (Princeton RI). If I need more volume, I can always fall back on the PRII.

Well, I guess this is going to be replaced with a DIY cab thread—I stumbled onto a $5 microscope case on eff book marketplace, and the seller said “I just want it out of here, I’ll leave it on the doorstep, don’t worry about the $5.” It was even right on my way home from work. Now the questions are, what speaker, closed or open back? It’s 8 1/2 x 10 x 15.

It has a door, so I would set it up so that it can be used open OR closed.

Agree. They’re a fun project, built this back in the ‘80’s… still sounds great. This started as a 2x12” slant cab 1/4stack and when I blew a speaker in my Marshall 1960a, poached the lower section and cut off the bottom half. Stuffed with fiberglass loaded with Celestion g12, sealed with silicon calk.

I can recommend a Carvin V112E 1×12" closed back guitar extension cabinet. I get a good sound with a coupla different amps. It's got a Eminence GT12-8 speaker, weighs just 25 lbs. and costed me $180 bucks new.

I play blues, classic rock, metal and get the sounds I need for those styles, like clean, edge of breakup, crunch and distortion. Varying the settings for each amp and guitar you use will dial in good sounds with the same speaker.
