Well, the first step. I haven't quite finished my last one - I'm waiting for spraying.

But I did have a nice bridge left over from a change of plan on the 51 P Bass build, and some other minor bits of hardware and always had it in mind that a standard post 57 P Bass would be next, maybe later this year.

But I spotted this on the Guitarbuild website and at 1.6 kg I couldn't resist.

It's basically a 51 slab ash body routed for a split coil pickup with a tidied up pickguard (which I might not use.) I've got a post- 57 P Bass rosewood neck I'd like to use, but of course the heel shape is different so I'll have to see if the neck pocket can be reshaped. Any comments on that?
I'll book both in to Jon at https://rexterguitars.co.uk later in the spring I hope. 2 or 3 tone sunburst.

FAO kodiakblair: I'm getting a 4 coil split pickup from Martin Herrick for this.

Thanks for the suggestion last year.

    Cool build

How different is the heel on the neck you want to use? If it sits in the pocket far enough, you may be able hide gaps with a pickguard (though you might have to make a new one).

It's not a huge difference, and I think it should be straightforward to reshape the pocket. At present the neck won't fit in the pocket: the extra rounded end pushes the neck out so the taper interferes with the fit.
This pic shows a later model post 57 pickguard laid on the pre 57 square ended pocket. The neck I want to use fits this pickguard. The tort pickguard will be easy enough to file to the correct shape and as you say, will hide any discrepancies if they arise.

I need to do a few measurements to make sure the bridge saddles will still be located to give the correct scale length and enough intonation adjustment, but I don't think there'll be any significant change.
