Another HUGE thumbs up for the OD-3!

I've had numerous OD pedals over the years, too many to count, and the OD-3 is among the top 3 I've tried. I scored one used for $60. My only gripe is that when you increase the gain it starts to "sputter" a bit, almost like a fuzz, which I don't like. But for your application where you only want a bit of hair it will be PERFECT. It seems to also fatten up single coils a bit.

IIRC it has multiple opamps that treat different frequencies separately, kind of like the Klon concept, but not based on it. It has been called one of BOSS's best original works of art in pedal form.

JMHO.

The MXR Classic Overdrive or the Digitech Bad Monkey would work with the gain dialed back. Set the volume to a proper boost level and dial the gain back to where it adds very little (if any) crunch. Both are organic sounding like an OD3 or 808.

Boss Blues Driver BD-2. Stock.

This is exactly what it was made for - boost with a touch of dirt - but can do other things as well. Doesn't have the bassiness (is that a word?) of the OD-3 and the so-called "ice-pickiness (another new word?) that the modders claim needs to be fixed is quite controllable with the tone knob.

"Slightly dirty boost pedal"? Isn't that the *definition* of an Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer?

Yeah, but a TS into a TS derivative might be too much of the same...I thought it might be overkill...too middy=too muddy.

schenk -- I was gonna add Digitech Mystic Blues or Screamin' Blues to the list, then I saw you had a thread about it in 2010. I've never tried it... how is it for this application? :D

Sparkle Drive, all the way. Easiest way to obtain clean boost and a little (or a lot of) hair...

Danelectro TOD-1 is great as well.

Highly recommend the TC Electronics Spark Booster, I got one not too long ago, and it is just crazy versatile!

I have a Keeley modded BD-2 that works great for a little edge. I liked it before the mod, too, and it isn't real expensive. I also have a Pedal Worx Texas 2 Step that might fit your needs.

My problem is I so rarely use pedals I'm not 100% sure what they do. Pedals are something I've always had but will pull out of the closet only a couple times a year, then the novelty wears off after a day and they go back in the closet.

I'm thinking a stock SD-1 with the gain down might even do the trick...cheapest option around and has a slightly different flavor than the JD9.

Or the MXR Classic OD which is basically the same in the beige version or with a flip of the switch, right?

The Tube Screamer was basically a copy of the OD-1 and the SD-1 is an OD-1 with a tone knob... So, if you go with the SD-1, aren't you doing just that? The difference will really be in the clipping of the two circuits.

Retro-Sonic Boost. (Boss FA-1 clone) super versatile and has an internal pot that will flip it over to a dirty boost...
