I agree that pups is annoying, but I do use it, though never orally, just when writing. And the the only time I write about pickups in really any context is on this forum. So, my thorough laziness and embarrassing indoctrination is at least somewhat contained.
Sorry for the confusion. In the post you quoted I wasn’t listing “pups” as cringe slang, I was just using it to punk ReverendRevolver because it annoys him so much. Loves me this one: pups

some people have too much time on their hands to worry about things like this post , while valid in its own context if you believe it, there are more things of importance than worry that some one calls a collection of guitars a herd. have fun!
But at least it's giving us something to write about!

Referring to your guitar as “she”

I understand that people can have reactions to certain slang words—particularly ones that are overused. While I don’t find myself using many if any of those mentioned in this thread, I’m not particularly bothered by most either, I suppose.

But referring to guitars (or cars, boats, or any other inanimate object) using feminine pronouns—equating women to objects—needs to stop already.

My dad does this. I’ve let him know how I feel. He continues to do it.

My buddy refers to his garage as his "stable" because it's where he keeps his horses. His Trans Am is parked there.

When my cousin asks if you want to go to Gainesville, he's not talking about the city in Florida, he's asking if you want to go to the gym, and make gains.

Not guitar related, but these always gave me a chuckle.

It's not equating women to objects, it's equating objects (guitars) to women because they have some features like women that we love (or hate at times).

Rickenbacker "jangle"

I went to Bezerklee in the 70's. EVERYONE referred to their guitars as an axe...I couldn't get into the clique without using that "lingo"...lol!
Oh...and of course "gig". We did that for frogs!

Having said that (uh oh, another cringe phrase), all the guitars I've named have been guys: Gumby, Mr. Gibson and Pokey.

Some of us have become aware of this highly controversial issue. Have you ever seen the movie Pacific Rim, with the giant Jaegers battling Kaiju? Here's the official trailer for reference.

I have always been a big fan of mech battles going all the way back to a Japanese cartoon saga called, "Robotech."

That established, instead of naming my guitars female names, I decided to give them the Jaeger names from Pacific Rim, as I had a guitar that seemed to match the profile of all Jaegers used in the film.

Oldest Mark I Jaeger. No frills, just ass kicking which is the '08 AS tele in my avatar.
Code name: Cherno Alpha.

Mark III The main Jaeger that saves the world and is sort of the star of the film, which is my parts strat, which will do most things very well, but is a bit dated.
Code Name: Gypsy Danger.

Mark IV A three armed Jaeger piloted by Chinese triplets, and solid candy apple red in color. My Suhr super strat. The guitar that can do anything.
Code Name: Crimson Typhoon.

Mark V The fastest, most advanced Jaeger, piloted by an Aussie father/son team. My first 7 string Ibanez, which is perfect for fretboard gymnastics.
Code Name: Striker Eureka.

So, there you have it, my quiver. A term that I really don't care for, used just to remain on point as to the intended thread topic.

Are there any slangs used on these forums that are so played that they make you cringe?

I'll start:
Herd - herds are for cows or sheep, not guitars

Stable - stables are for horses or pimps

Punches above it's weight - guitars amps and pedals don't punch and not in weight classes either

Family - referring to your guitars as a family, makes a reader wonder if you've got a real family or if you sit down to dinner with your guitars

Pups - Not sure if you're referring to dogs, pickups or feet
Not sure I get why theses are cringe-worthy. (That term makes me cringe). i appreciate the creative use of language. And I don’t think these qualify as slang anyway.
