I wonder if we could have avoided the whole "pups" issue had the first person to use it spelled it "p'ups".
Sorry for the confusion. In the post you quoted I wasn’t listing “pups” as cringe slang, I was just using it to punk ReverendRevolver because it annoys him so much. Loves me this one: pupsI agree that pups is annoying, but I do use it, though never orally, just when writing. And the the only time I write about pickups in really any context is on this forum. So, my thorough laziness and embarrassing indoctrination is at least somewhat contained.
But at least it's giving us something to write about!some people have too much time on their hands to worry about things like this post , while valid in its own context if you believe it, there are more things of importance than worry that some one calls a collection of guitars a herd. have fun!
Referring to your guitar as “she”
Snoopy thinks that's all that people say.blah blah blah, that's one of my favorites around here. Wait, no one really says that?
It's not equating women to objects, it's equating objects (guitars) to women because they have some features like women that we love (or hate at times).I understand that people can have reactions to certain slang words—particularly ones that are overused. While I don’t find myself using many if any of those mentioned in this thread, I’m not particularly bothered by most either, I suppose.
But referring to guitars (or cars, boats, or any other inanimate object) using feminine pronouns—equating women to objects—needs to stop already.
My dad does this. I’ve let him know how I feel. He continues to do it.
Having said that (uh oh, another cringe phrase), all the guitars I've named have been guys: Gumby, Mr. Gibson and Pokey. It's not equating women to objects, it's equating objects (guitars) to women because they have some features like women that we love (or hate at times).
Some of us have become aware of this highly controversial issue. Have you ever seen the movie Pacific Rim, with the giant Jaegers battling Kaiju? Here's the official trailer for reference.I understand that people can have reactions to certain slang words—particularly ones that are overused. Careful, that's racist. I got a 1 week ban for a lot less than that, and it was 100% true.Misuse of the word "mojo." ugh...
Any time someone akses me a question. Please, don't aks if you can't ask.
That’s true. Interesting article about this here: https://theconversation.com/amp/ask-or-aks-how-linguistic-prejudice-perpetuates-inequality-175839Careful, that's racist.
It is true that it is considered racist by some, but it is a just flat wrong pronunciation. There is no letter that makes a "k" sound before the "s" in ASk.That’s true. Not sure I get why theses are cringe-worthy. (That term makes me cringe). i appreciate the creative use of language. And I don’t think these qualify as slang anyway. Are there any slangs used on these forums that are so played that they make you cringe?
I'll start:
Herd - herds are for cows or sheep, not guitars
Stable - stables are for horses or pimps
Punches above it's weight - guitars amps and pedals don't punch and not in weight classes either
Family - referring to your guitars as a family, makes a reader wonder if you've got a real family or if you sit down to dinner with your guitars
Pups - Not sure if you're referring to dogs, pickups or feet
And Snoop Diggity delicious too—dude has cooked with Martha Stewart!Snoop could start a Chicken Restaurant Chain and call it "Extra Cripsy's".
It would probably be "Off The Hook" !!!
