    Understatement of the year!

Say you were worth a million. The McCartneys buying that guitar would be like you buying a $50 guitar.

Why wouldn't Paul McCartney have an original '54 Fender Telecaster? A reissue, if they exist, as good as they are, just wouldn't be the same thing.

    Is Nancy wealthy?

The impression of an ashtray in the case lining looks about right.

Or is that part of the relic process now?

I would imagine for someone like Paul McCartney or those close to him, it’s just as easy to procure a top-notch vintage instrument as it is to have one made.

And for someone like Paul McCartney or those close to him, the difference between a $45,000 guitar and a $4,500 guitar isn’t stratospheric. It would be like an everyday player choosing whether to buy a Vintera or an American Original.

I get what you're saying, but what you're "worth" and how much cash you have to spend are two entirely different things.

Point taken. Seems like either scenario is possible.

But still...that's a very clean guitar.

If it's real vintage...good on Sir Paul then! It's nice that a guitar like that is actually getting played regularly instead of locked in a vault.

She's extremely wealthy. Nancy was worth around $200 million before she met Paul. Her family owns the trucking company New England Motor Freight, and she was the Vice President of the company.

His wife (Nancy) likely would just tell her personal assistant to go find it for her, she doesn't have to really do anything to get a real or custom shop one (other than make a request to her team).

My wife bought me a nice Telecaster in 2003.

This is all I have in common with Paul.

I very much imagine that Sir Paul and his intimates are connected enough at every level of the music business that if his missus (or her agents) puts out the word that she's looking for a special guitar, doors open and things appear from vaults of dealers and/or collectors that might not be made available to us mere mortals at any price. So it would not surprise me if it were an original lefty '54 in very nice condition. Just my opinion.

Custom Shop for another Lefty that was being sold somewhere (Reverb?).

She probably had someone on the lookout for it... or, he (Paul) saw/heard about it, and told her.

A lot of speculation here. We'll probably never know.
    He's Paul, and we're not. :(
But I have to say I really do like the picture of him playing that Tele at 78. He looks like he was born to play it.

If Paul bought Nancy a diamond tennis bracelet for her birthday, you can bet it would not be rhinestones or plastic costume jewelry. By the same token, I can't imagine that the guitar is anything but a legit, original 54. A custom shop relic would be downright silly in this situation. He looks great with it.

Paul probably hasn't had to pay for a guitar since about 1963.

Indeed. He's got two, count 'em, two lefty '59 Bursts*, he wouldn't need a replica Blackguard.

*Between McCartney and McEnroe I think they account for about 75% of the total production of lefty bursts.
