Sir Paul was just interviewed by British GQ, and his daughter Mary McCartney took the photos, including this one of Macca with a blonde tele:

    Mary McCartney told British GQ:

“The thing of being a lockdown is that we weren’t at some location in a studio – we were in a real space. I think there’s a calmness about him because of that. And also a bit of rock’n’roll, because that picture with the white Telecaster is the first time he’s been photographed with that. I was thinking, ‘What would be good [that] people haven’t seen? He’s been photographed a lot over the years, so that will be interesting for the musos.’ It’s a present that he was given by Nancy, his wife. I think he told her about this guitar that he really liked and then she found it for him, because it’s always hard to find something to give him as a present. And he’d been recording with it that week – he’s been using it a lot more in the last few months."

GQ captioned the photo: "In front of a stained-glass window by artist Brain Clarke, the ex-Beatle plays his 1954 butterscotch ‘lefty’ Fender Telecaster with black pick guard. The model is so old it was produced the year Elvis Presley recorded ‘That’s All Right’."

Thought it was neat to see Paul with a tele, and to hear that he's been reocrding with it! The only other tele I've seen him use is a flipped, right-handed sunburst Esquire in the studio in the mid/late 60s with The Beatles, and a lefty sunburst model in 1969/1970 used on the McCartney album (and possibly with Wings).

Do you guys think this one is an actual 1954 lefty, or a reissue, or custom shop or something?

It must be original. I haven't heard of 54 reissues (CS or not). Besides... it's Paul.

Surely one of our resident experts knows whether Fender made a lefty Telecaster in 1954? Wouldn't there at least be a record of one, whether or not it would be THIS one?
It sure doesn't LOOK that old.....;)

It looks so nice and new, that's why I wonder if it's actually from 1954. Of course, I wouldn't doubt Paul/Nancy could get ahold of a museum quality 54 lefty (if one existed).

Well, kinda just answered my own question. This one is 1951.

It would have to be Nancy paying for it. I've heard Paul is so tight with money he wouldn't pay anywhere near what that would cost.

Regarding is it a CS ... I wouldn't doubt that if someone of Macca's stature, or indeed those close to him, said build me a .... that Fender would be all .... well I don't know about that, it's not in the catalogue etc.

Sure looks a nice guitar from here and sure does have a newish look to it ... would it be the ultimate NOS if original? But, accepting that a case can be relic'd too - interesting imprints where the strings and ashtray (removed in the photo) would have been pressing against the lid inside?

Mary McCartney said that it was a gift from Paul's wife Nancy, I think for his 78th birthday that he just had on June 18

Here is the thing! Yeah, the thing is here.THe question might be. Why, in what world, would Paul NOT have these guitars All lefty>>EBO violin bass & EB3, Two or three lefty SG's, 335, 390's, casino, a Jazzmaster, a nocaster, a thinline, Guild starfire and Wilshire, the best lightest LP's. WELLLLLLLL, he probably does have all that.THen all the custom builders making one off lefty's dor Paul, announced, and unannounced. And there are probably family instructions;PLEASE NO GUITARS;just show up. I expect,(haven't read the article yet) THat this is one of those OMG feeling resonating guitars that make you stutter. And, it is a lefty.

Do left-handed players not play as much as right-handed? :):):)
I would think a left-handed guitar would be so rare and hard to come by, that it would get MORE use than a "righty". But who knows? It could have spent nearly seventy years under a bed somewhere.

Went through a quick mind loop of wondering why I should care if it's real or not. This, that, the other. Jimmy crack corn, really.

But the interview had this nugget, which many muso's struggle with, the need for some kind of validation from your peers:

"A classic example of that was when I was playing “Hey Jude” to John and I said, “The movement you need is on your shoulder.” I turned round to him and Yoko, who was standing behind me, and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll fix that.” And John said, “No, you won’t. That’s the best line in it.” But if you don’t have that, you can sometimes be, “What I’m doing is crap and my life amounts to nothing.”

Think about what would be easier for his wife.

Hunt down and purchase a very rare and very expensive vintage guitar?

Or call the Fender Custom Shop and order one?

Look at that thing. It's a lefty and it's spotless. If it's real '54 it's easily in the 45 to 50 thousand dollar range. I know the McCartneys can likely afford whatever they want, but still...
